writing your checkpoint essay?
In GP you will develop 6 skills.
• Go to www.quizlet.live
• Enter the code you see on the screen
• Find your teammates.
• Play the game and have FUN.
• Go to “flashcards”
• Find 6 skills that you train in GP.
• Write their definitions in your own words,
replacing difficult words with words you
understand.
Global perspectives skills

• Research • Reflection

• Analysis • Communication

• Evaluation • Collaboration
Skills you are practicing now -
match the skill with its definition
• Assessment of the strengths and weaknesses
of something
• Research • Working together with others

something you have done or something that

exploring the causes and consequences of
these issues
Global perspectives skills

• Investigation into a study of materials and sources

• Research in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions
• Analysis • Breaking down of a topic into issues and exploring
the causes and consequences of these issues
• Evaluation • Assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of
something
• Reflection • Serious thought or consideration about something
you have done or something that has happened
• Communication • Transferring information from one place to
another, either by using spoken or written texts or
• Collaboration by non-verbal means
• Working together with others
Picking your research question
• A topic should be of your personal interest
• Are there enough sources of information to find?
• A topic can be the same as other students in your class, but
you research question must be unique to each student.
• Your research question should allow to form a national and
global perspective on the issue.
• There should be a contrast between national and global
perspective.
• You will use only secondary research sources, books and
internet research.
• Plan between 800 and 1000 words not including references.
Picking your research question
• Does your title (research question) allow for an answer?
• Does it allow you to focus on specific content?
• Think of this title: “Humans as a species”
• Is it a good title? Why?
• It is not a question that requires an answer
• It covers range of potential content that is too broad.
• Are these titles suitable for the report?
• 1. Has globalization led to a loss of culture?
• 2.Do women have the same right as men?
• 3.Has the internet changed family life?
• (discuss inn pairs )
• All 3 questions allow for an answer therefore they are suitable
for the report
Picking your research question
• What is wrong in this question?
• Is wind power a solution to energy crisis in the Netherlands?
• It does not allow to form a global perspective.
• Are the consequences of deforestation worth the gain?
• It lacks clarity so it is hard to provide a specific answer.
• It is difficult to answer what the gain is from deforestation.
• How do humans cause biodiversity and ecosystem loss?
• More descriptive writing than analysis and hard to include
different perspectives. Can you make this title better?
• Are humans responsible for biodiversity and ecosystem loss?
Picking your research question
• To what extent do religious beliefs cause conflict?
• To what extent questions do not allow for a conclusion or an
answer to be reached. How can we make it better?
• Do different religious beliefs cause conflict?
• Why is wind power the best solution to the energy crisis?
• It already assumes that wind power is a solution to the energy
crisis, so it does not allow for different perspectives to be fully
discussed. How can we make it better?
• Can renewable energy sources replace fossil fuels?
• A teacher can ask you to try to reword your question, so that
you are able to meet all the assessment criteria and get full
marks, but teachers cannot create a question for you.
Analysis of the issue
• Identifying and explaining the issue.
• What is the difference between response A and B?
• Response A – Nowadays biodiversity and ecosystems all over
the world are being threatened by deforestation and
globalisation. This is a serious global issue.
• Response B - Nowadays biodiversity and ecosystems all over
the world are being threatened by deforestation, as forests
are cut down for housing for the growing population. As a
result, animals and plants lose their natural habitat and are
threatened by extinction as they cannot survive elsewhere.
• A only identifies causes of deforestation, but B explains the
reasons of deforestation and explains how it threatens the
ecosystem.
Evaluation
• “Chocolate is good for you! Chocolate is full of antioxidants,
which help is stay healthy. Eating chocolate also helps lower
cholesterol levels and blood pressure, which in turn helps
lower our risk of having a stroke. Enjoy that chocolate bar
today without feeling guilty, knowing that it’s doing you good.
• Evaluate this source of information.
• Does it contain bias?
Evaluation
• Use mark scheme to decide how much points you will give to
a student for this evaluation:
• The article from PETA contains bias, because PETA is a charity
that is against harming animals in any way, so they are not in
favour of using animals for entertainment.
• This is 2 points because only 1 source is evaluated
• Also, we can’t really trust the second source as it’s from Wiki
website that can be edited by anyone so we don’t know if the
information is true or not.
• Now it’s worth 4 points
How many points from mark
scheme would you give?
• According to UNESCO if all girls in sub Saharan Africa and
South and West Asia had a primary education there would be
10% fewer girls under the age of 17 years becoming
pregnant. UNESCO can be trusted as a source that gives
accurate information.
• The Population Reference Bureau explains that adolescent
girls grow fast and are in need of nutrients for the body
especially during menstruation. The Bureau is a helpful
source because it provides research on a range of topics in a
way that people understand.
How many points from mark
scheme would you give?
• This information comes from a political website so might be
biased.

• In Zimbabwe, some people find it hard to raise enough money

to educate their children. This fact was taken from Wikipedia
which might not be a reliable source as anyone can edit the
information which might make it inaccurate and biased if
written by someone who is finding it difficult to afford to
educate their children.
Global and National
Perspective
• A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE may come from a
specific country, organisation, institution, or
even an individual, but it will have influence that
spreads beyond any one country.
• A NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE is a perspective based
on the needs and issues of an entire nation or
country. It may be made up of many viewpoints
and opinions that combine to form a national
perspective.
Contrast between national and
global perspective
• Example – fossil fuels.
• Think how global and national perspective might be
contrasting?
• United Nations has a global perspective that stands against of
using fossil fuels for reasons of sustainability and
environmental concerns
• But certain countries are in favour of using fossil fuels as they
are necessary for the economic development of those
countries
Contrast between national and
global perspective
• Showing contrast:
• However
• Alternatively
• Although
• In contrast
• Instead of
• Compared to
• Which is different from
Course of action
• Needs to be realistic
• Local or national
• It can be simple and straightforward, for example raising
awareness among family and friends
Conclusion
• Includes answer to the research question
• Personal perspective – has it changed or still the same, but the
feelings are stronger
• Think: has my perspective changed?
• What has cause it to change?
• Do I still think the same about the issue

• You should go to the opinion that you gave on the issue before
you did research and compare how it changed
Referencing sources
• Author
• Title
• Do not form a part of a 800 to 1000 limit
• Need to be consistent using the same system
Include sub-headings
• Introduction
• Causes and consequences
• Global Perspective
• National Perspective
• Evaluation of sources
• National or local course of action
• Conclusion
• Reference list
Structuring a research report
• Linking terms:
• However
• Therefore
• As a result
• This means
• In conclusion
