INDIGENOUS - originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country;

INDIGENOUS MATERIALS - are naturally and locally found in a specific place. This
reduces building costs and helps to boost local economies.

INDIGENOUS ARCHITECTURE
A style of architecture that is specific to a particular region.

“Capiz” of Omexco
Features wall coverings made with capiz shells. After a careful
cleaning and drying process, the shells are softened, coloured with
water-based dyes and then polished. Some weaves in this collection
are interwoven with bakbak (bark of the banana tree) providing a
refined association of different authentic natural materials.
STRAW BALE

THERMAL PROPERTIES

Bale walls are typically

coated with a thick layer of
plaster, which provides a
well-distributed thermal
mass, active on a short-term.

STRAW BALE commonly used in natural

building or "brown"
CONSTRUCTIO construction projects.

Two Storey Hotel in Europe Built Entirely With Straw Bales

Firmly committed to sustainable construction methods and

the ecological ethic, Maya Boutique Hotel's straw-bale
construction reduces its energy needs and creates a cozy,
comfortable atmosphere throughout the year. Cool in
summer and warm in winter.

“In this building we tried to reduce constructive solution to the

very few that the project needed. As a single architectural
entity the perimeter wall is entirely made with straw-bales. “
BAMBOO

versatile and highly

reliable raw material

commonly used as a
framework in the
nipa hut
BAMBOO

Technology has allowed bamboo to be cured, where it

is soaked in special solutions that eliminate the
starches that make it susceptible to fire and termite
infestation. It also preserves the material, allowing it
to last for as long as 30 years
BAMBOO

The S3H is designed with the Filipino

cultural value and community in mind,
with its distinct triangular structural
shape of the bahay kubo that evokes
familiarity, security and a temporary
safe house from disasters. The bahay
kubo’s high-pitched roof and long
eaves provided the structural outline
for the S3H, which evokes a sense of
S3H(Sustainable+Strong+School+Home) familiarity and shelter.

PREFABRICATION
• Prefabrication is the practice of assembling
components of a structure in a factory or
other manufacturing site, and transporting
complete assemblies or sub-assemblies to the
construction site where the structure is to be
located.
Materials
Glass
• Allows natural light to enter the house even if
doors/windows are closed so thus it saves energy
and also lowers the electricity bills, brightens up the
room and brings out the beauty of the home, and
most importantly it boosts the mood of occupant.

• It is unaffected by noise, air, water and most of the

acids hence discoloration, alteration in the degree of
shine, softening, swelling, the detachment of
coatings and blistering will not occur.
Zuellig Building
• The building’s double-paned, low-emissivity glass curtain wall. The
ceramic "frit" pattern minimizes solar heat gain and energy loss.

• It allows 90% of the interior office space to have natural light. The low-
E glass is also designed to reflect infrared and ultra-violet radiation to
protect people and assets within the building from sun damage.

• sensor-controlled lighting system to reduce electric lighting based on

the intensity of daylight

• efficient HVAC system to regulate temperature and humidity, using

fresh air from outdoors.
Metal Building System

• are used in industrial applications

• The basic elements of the metal building system

include primary rigid frames, secondary members
such as wall girts and roof purlins, cladding and
bracing. These elements are engineered and
designed to act as an integrated building system.
• Complex production facilities
• Warehouses
• Distribution centers
• Automobile dealerships
• Office complexes
• Airplane hangars
• Arenas
Insulation
• Thermal insulation refers to the use of appropriate
insulation materials and design adaptations for
buildings to slow the transfer of heat through the
enclosure to reduce heat loss and gain

• Heat is lost or gained by transmission through the

ceilings walls, floors, windows, and doors.

• Insulation products are designed to frustrate the

transfer of heat across the material itself.
Polyethylene Aluminized Foam
HVAC System
• Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
is the technology of indoor and vehicular
environmental comfort. Its goal is to provide
thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air
quality.

• Outside, fresh air is generally drawn into the

system by a vent into the indoor heat exchanger
section, creating positive air pressure.
Façade Systems
Curtain Walls
• Curtain wall systems are non-structural cladding
systems for the external walls of buildings. They are
generally associated with large, multi-storey buildings.
• Utilized to keep the weather out and the occupants in.

Louvers
• is a ventilation product that allows air to pass through
it while keeping out unwanted elements such as water,
dirt and debris.
ROOFING
Gutters/ Drains
• Simply as a gutter, is part of a building’s
water discharge system. It is channel that runs
around the perimeter of a roof, and collects
rainwater runoff from the roof, discharging it,
usually to rainwater downpipes which convey it
to a drainage system.

• This protects the exterior surfaces of

the building and its foundations from damp and
potentially suffering damage.
• Planting

A green roof or living roof is a roof of

a building that is partially or completely covered
with vegetation and a growing medium, planted
over a waterproofing membrane. It may also
include additional layers such as a root
barrier and drainage and irrigation systems.
