Electricity sector in India

• The utility electricity sector in India has one national grid with an installed
capacity of 357.875 GW as of 30 June 2019.
• India is the world's third largest producer and third largest consumer of
electricity. India's electricity sector is dominated by fossil fuels, and in
particular, coal, which during the 2017-18 fiscal year produced about three-
fourths of the country's electricity. However, the government is pushing for
increased investment in renewable energy.
• The National Electricity Plan of 2018, prepared by the Government of India,
states that the country does not need additional non-renewable power
plants in the utility sector until 2027, with the commissioning of 50,025
MW coal-based power plants under construction and achieving 275,000
MW total installed renewable power capacity.
Renewable energy Resources

• Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources,

which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such
as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
• National renewable energy markets are projected to continue to grow
strongly in the coming decade and beyond. Iceland and Norway, generate
all their electricity using renewable energy already, and many other
countries have the set a goal to reach 100% renewable energy in the future
• About 47 nations around the world already have over 50 percent of
electricity from renewable resources. In international public opinion
surveys there is strong support for promoting renewable sources such as
solar power and wind power.
SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM IN INDIA
• Solar power in India is a fast developing industry. The country's solar
installed capacity reached 29.55 GW as of 30 June 2019. India has the
lowest capital cost per MW globally to install the solar power plants.
• India expanded its solar-generation capacity 8 times from 2,650 MW
on 26 May 2014 to over 20 GW as on 31 January 2018. The country
added 3 GW of solar capacity in 2015-2016, 5 GW in 2016-2017 and
over 10 GW in 2017-2018.
• Rooftop solar power accounts for 3.4 GW, of which 70% is industrial
or commercial. In addition to its large-scale grid-connected solar
photovoltaic (PV) initiative, India is developing off-grid solar power for
local energy needs.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOLAR POWER PLANT
• Photovoltaic power station
• Concentrated solar thermal power Station

• Photovoltaic power station:

• A photovoltaic power station, also known as a solar park, is a large-
scale photovoltaic system (PV system) designed for the supply
of merchant power into the electricity grid.
• The solar power source is via photovoltaic modules that convert light
directly to electricity. the nameplate capacity of a photovoltaic power
stations is rated in megawatt-peak (MWp), which refers to the
theoretical maximum solar array's DC power output.

ABOUT CONCENTRETED SOLAR POWER
• Concentrated solar power:
• Concentrated solar power (also called concentrating solar
power, concentrated solar thermal, and CSP) systems generate solar
power by using mirrors or lenses to concentrate a large area of sunlight
onto a small area. Electricity is generated when the concentrated light is
converted to heat (solar thermal energy), which drives a heat
engine (usually a steam turbine) connected to an electrical power
generator
• CSP had a world's total installed capacity of 5,500 MW in 2018, up from
354 MW in 2005. The largest CSP projects in the world are the Ivanpah
Solar Power Facility (392 MW) in the United States (which uses solar power
tower technology), the Noor / Ouarzazate Solar Power Station (360 MW) in
Morocco and Dhursar (125 MW) in India (which uses Fresnel reflector).

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CSP
• In most cases, CSP technologies currently cannot compete on price
with photovoltaic solar panels, which have experienced huge growth in
recent years due to falling prices and much smaller operating costs. CSP
generally needs large amount of direct solar radiation, and its energy
generation falls dramatically with cloud cover. This is in contrast with
photovoltaics, which can produce electricity also from diffuse radiation.
• However, an advantage of CSP over photovoltaic conversion is that as a
thermal technology, a CSP plant can incorporate thermal energy storage,
which stores energy either in the form of sensible heat, or as latent heat
(for example, using molten salt), which enables these plants to continue to
generate electricity whenever it is needed, whether day or night. This
makes CSP a dispatchable form of solar. This is particularly valuable in
places where there is already a high penetration of PV.
Photovoltaic system

• A photovoltaic system, also PV system or solar power system, is a power

system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics. It
consists of an arrangement of several components, including solar
panels to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity, a solar inverter to
convert the output from direct to alternating current.
• PV systems range from small, rooftop-mounted or building-
integrated systems with capacities from a few to several tens of kilowatts,
to large utility-scale power stations of hundreds of megawatts. Nowadays,
most PV systems are grid-connected, while off-grid or stand-alone
systems only account for a small portion of the market.
