DENGUE FEVER
• A potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease caused by 4 type
of dengue viruses (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4).
• Recovery from one gives lifelong immunity to that strain,
but not to the other three.
• Good evidence that further infection by different virus
strains can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) – a
lethal complication of dengue.
• Each year an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever
occurs worldwide.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
The viruses are transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes
aegypti and Aedes albopictus female mosquitoes that feed
both indoors and outdoors during the daytime.
These mosquitoes thrive in areas with standing water,
including puddles, water tanks, containers and old tires.
Lack of reliable sanitation and regular garbage collection also
contribute to the spread of the mosquitoes.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION:
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:
HERMAN’S RASH (DENGUE RASH)
LABORATORY TEST:

1. Complete blood count (CBC) & Platelet count

monitoring. – traditional method.
2. Dengue NS1 & Dengue Duo - serologic test;
detects DENV IgM & IgG Antibodies.
-Most widely used method for diagnosing
Dengue Fever.
DENGUE CLASSIFICATION & SEVERITY:

1.Dengue without Warning Signs

2.Dengue with Warning Signs
3.Severe Dengue
DENGUE CLASSIFICATION & SEVERITY:
DENGUE WARNING SIGNS:
DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER
TREATMENT:

• Dengue fever is usually a self-limited illness.

• No specific antiviral treatment currently
available.
• Bed rest
• Supportive care with analgesics (Paracetamol)
• Avoid Aspirin – may worsen bleeding.
• Drink plenty of water or fluid replacement (Oral
Rehydration Solution).
TREATMENT
Papaya Leaves and Tawa-tawa Plants helps to increase platelet count.
