DENGUE FEVER
• A potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease caused by 4 type
of dengue viruses (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4).
• Recovery from one gives lifelong immunity to that strain,
but not to the other three.
• Good evidence that further infection by different virus
strains can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) – a
lethal complication of dengue.
• Each year an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever
occurs worldwide.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
The viruses are transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes
aegypti and Aedes albopictus female mosquitoes that feed
both indoors and outdoors during the daytime.
These mosquitoes thrive in areas with standing water,
including puddles, water tanks, containers and old tires.
Lack of reliable sanitation and regular garbage collection also
contribute to the spread of the mosquitoes.
