Introduction

 Protein based glue


 Main ingredient : Gelatin
 Made from skin and bone of fish
 A good adhesive
 It is more or less similar to fish gelatin

Preservation

 The fish skin can preserved in


◦ Salt (3.5 %) – for short term preservation
◦ Drying – for long term preservation

 However, fish head should not be


preserved. It must used fresh.

Protocol

The fish is procured from landing centre or


market

The fishes are washed with running water


containing available chlorine of 10 ppm to
remove dirt and other microbes

The fishes are graded based on quality and


preserved accordingly or used directly
The fish skin is again washed and soaked in
freshwater to remove dirt

Then, fishes are cut into pieces

The skin is transferred to lime liquor to


open fibre bundles and to remove
cementing materials
Washing

Bating to remove excess lime

Washing thoroughly

Then, wash in steam jacketed double


bottomed cooker
In cooker, a small amount of acetic acid is
added for hydrolysis of stock into glue

Cooking temperature is 50 – 60 C for 6 – 10


hrs for skin

The glue liquor is pumped into tanks and


pass through evaporator (open pan type /
vaccum)
Evaporation continues until the glue reaches
proper viscosity

After, drawn into cooling box and it is cooled


below 15 C for 12-18 hrs to coagulate

The jelly type glue is cut into desired size and


dried in a dried and packed accordingly
Uses

 Used to repair parchment sheets, which


are used for writing
 Used as painting material by some artists
in China
 Acts as binder, glazing agent or protective
coating for paintings
 Used for building and repairing wooden
antiques, as well as building new
products.
