BIODIVERSITY

-biological diversity
-Variation among living organism
- variety and abundance of life
forms within species, a community,
an ecosystem or the biosphere
Levels of Biodiversity
1. Species Diversity – different kinds of
organism
2. Genetic Diversity – genetic information that
organism contain
3. Ecosystem diversity – different kinds of
places where organisms live and the
interconnections that bind them together
Classifying and
Naming
Organisms
Activity 1

What’s in a name?
Q1. Are there organisms that
others gave the same name to as
your group did? Give examples.

Q2. Are there organisms that

others gave a different name as
your group did? What are these
organisms?
Different Organisms
Different Names of Organism
BIRD (as a group): Ibon (Tag.), Pispis (P. Bis.),
Langgam (C. Bis.), Mammanu (Ibanag)

(Tag., Ibn., Bik., P. Bis.),
Dangla/Limo-Limo (Ilk.), Dagtan
(If.)
Taxonomy – is the branch of
science concerned with the
classification and naming of
organisms.
- comes from the Greek words
taxis meaning arrangement, and
nomos meaning laws.
Classification or Categories of
Organisms
1. Domain – highest taxonomic rank
under which organisms are
classified based on the
fundamental differences in their
genetic makeup.
2. Kingdom – based on an organisms
cellular organization
3. Phylum (Phyla) – based on their
basic structure

4. Class
5. Order
6. Family
7. Genus (Genera)
8. Species – most basic unit in the
biological classification
Match the following words

Allium domestica =corn

Homo cepa =human
Musca sapiens =dog
Canis mays =housefly
Zea familiaris =onion
Scientific Name – name given for
any organism to be identified.
- consist of two words in latin
language… (Latin Language is an
unchanging Language).
Binomial Nomenclature – the current
naming system, spawned from the
work of Carl Linnaeus.
* It was Linnaeus who proposed that
two Latin words be used to name
organisms. Binomial means two. These
two names give the scientific or Latin
name of an organism. The first name is
the genus of the organism. The second
name is the species.
* The names given to organisms
may be according to who
discovered it, the place where it
was discovered, or simply to
describe how it looks.
Sample Classification of Organisms
( See page 227)
Evaluation (1/2 crosswise)
Match the following words in column B to Column C to
identify the name of the organisms in Column A
Column A Column B Column C
Name of Organism Genus Name Species Name
1. Lion A. Homo a. catus
2. Domesticated Cat B. Felis b. familiaris
3. Wolf C. Canis c. leo
4. Bangus D. Zea d. lupus
5. Human E. Chanos e. sapiens
7. Dog F. Panthera f. cepa
8. Corn G. Allium g. chanos
9. Onion H. Canis h. mays
10. Housefly I. Musca i. domestica
Early Studies…………….
Organisms were grouped into
1. Eukaryotes – multicellular organism, larger in
size because of the greater number of cells
their bodies contain.

2. Prokaryotes – tiny and unicellular, referred to

as microorganisms.

identified.

organisms live and the interconnections
that bind them together
5. Archeabacteria dapted to very
salty environments.
6. Can live in places with high
temperature, like volcanic hot
springs with temperature 80 to
110 ̊C.
7. Can survive in places where
there is no oxygen.
