Introduction
• Human genome size------------- ????????????/

• DNA fingerprinting involves identifying differences in some specific region in

DNA sequence called repetitive DNA.

• How to separate Bulk DNA and repetitive DNA ?

…………………………………………………….

• Bulk DNA form major peak and other small peaks are referred as satellite
DNA.
Satellite DNA
• Normally donot code for proteins, but they form large portion of human
genome (NCERT page 121)

• These sequences show high degree of polymorphism and form basis of DNA
fingerprinting.

• If inheritable mutation is observed in population at high frequency, it is

called DNA polymorphism.

•Very important lines of NCERT……………

What are VNTRS?
• Again important line of NCERT

• Alec Jeffrey, used satellite DNA as probe for high

degree of polymorphism, he called them VNTRs
i.e. Variable Number Tandem Repeats
What samples can be used for DNA fingerprinting ?
• Blood, Hair, Saliva, Semen, Body tissues etc.

• There are 8 steps of DNA fingerprinting--
