Automatic Power Meter Reading System

Using GSM Network

ABSTRACT METHOD OF OPERATION
This paper discusses the evolution of the
conventional wattmeters present at each consumer’s house, and the
project will be called the smart wattmeter.
A smart power meter functions like the conventional
wattmeters which measures the power consumption. However, its
advancement is that it can measure power consumption and
calculate for the power cost directly and send the reading to the
consumer’s cellular phone. The system allows minimal space for
errors since everything will be done automatically, thus this will be
a great help to the electricity provider for it will regain the trust of
the consumers.
The main magic in this project is provided by the
transmitter and receiver system which will make use of the GSM
system. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) gathers
data and information, compacts and send it through a channel down
to the other end.

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
The ordinary wattmeter will be improved by
integrating a GSM modem onto its internal circuitries. Thus,
enabling the meter to transmit the power consumption reading to
the provider’s side just like a simple text message. A special SIM
card will be used to identify each consumer, unlike the usual sim
card, this is only for reading and billing purposes.

Since the wattmeter used is digital and computer Figure 3. The GPM Web Portal eBilling System
based, it will be designed such that it will be able store all the
previous power readings even when power runs out usually during REFERENCES
black outs. Thus the use of certain microcontrollers is also needed. • Chandler, T. (2005). The technology development of automatic metering and monitoring
