Background to the Study
• Quantification of construction works has an important role in the
project-planning phase since many cost relevant decisions (such as
material selection and pricing) are made at this stage.

• A well prepared cost estimate leads to better planning of the

construction process and the use of financing, while an incorrect or
careless cost estimate can lead to problems and delays during the
construction process, or even stop it outright.

• Construction estimates are more accurate when construction

contract drawings and specifications are 100% complete. As such it
is very challenging to obtain accurate early estimates for buildings
since the early phases of construction projects are commonly
characterized with limited or no construction documents.

Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to develop a model for predicting the weight of
reinforcements per cubic meter of concrete in beams of buildings. The
following objectives are the premise for achieving the aim of the study:

• To determine the volume of concrete in sampled beams.

• To determine the reinforcement weight in sampled beams.

• To establish the relationship between reinforcement quantities

and their weight per cubic meter in sampled beams.

• To develop predictive models for predicting the weight of reinforcement

per cubic meter of concrete.
Research Methodology
• The methodology that will be adopted in addressing
the objectives of this study can be found below:
– Pearson Correlation and Regression Analysis
– SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 22

Pearson correlation analysis is a widely used statistical tool

that is used to measure the extent or degree of relationship
between two variables. For this study, Pearson Correlation
analysis will be used to investigate the relationship between
reinforcement quantities and their weight per cubic meter in
sampled beams obtained from measurement.
Research Design
• By virtue of the nature of the research, survey
design will be adopted for this research.
Survey research method is one in which a
group of people or items are studied by
collecting and analyzing data from them that
are considered to be representative of the
entire group.
Population
• 30 structural and architectural drawings of
buildings will be used to carry out this
research.
Data Collection
• Secondary research data will be primarily
obtained from measurement of beams in
sampled 30 structural and architectural
drawings of buildings.
Significance of the Study
• This research study will be useful because the
development of more efficient forecasting models could
improve the accuracy of early quantification buildings;
consequently, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of
financial and economic feasibility decisions.
• Accurate early forecasting models are particularly
beneficial during the decision making phase because early
stage building design decisions are more cost sensitive
compared to decisions made later in the building process.
• The model will minimize uncertainty, financial risks, losses,
delays, litigation, and customer dissatisfaction, and other
detrimental effects from inaccurate estimates.
