    Gravity assist is a technique used in spaceflight to alter the path and speed of a spacecraft using the relative movement and gravity of a planet or other astronomical object. It allows spacecraft to use less propellant by borrowing kinetic energy from the planet's motion to achieve large changes in trajectory. Gravity assist was first proposed in 1918 and first used by Soviet probes in the 1960s.     • Yuri Kondratyuk in his paper dated 1918
    which was published in 1938 stated that a
    spacecraft travelling between two planets can
    be accelerated at the beginning and the end
    of the trajectory using their gravities.
