What is Gravity Assist?
• Gravity assist is taking advantage of an
astronomical object or a planet’s gravity and
its relative movement to alter the path and
speed of a spacecraft.
• Mostly used in interplanetary and interstellar
missions
Why Gravity Assist is used?

• To “SAVE PROPELLANT?” (No).

• To Reduce Expenses(YES!)
How does it work?

Explanation
we consider two reference frames

A first thought and a first use
• Yuri Kondratyuk in his paper dated 1918
which was published in 1938 stated that a
spacecraft travelling between two planets can
be accelerated at the beginning and the end
of the trajectory using their gravities.
• It was first used by the soviet probe Luna 3
Examples
• Luna 3
• Mariner 10
• Voyager 1,2
• Galileo
• Ulysses
• Messenger
• Cassini
• Rosetta
• Juno
and many more
