Public works department has a glorious history in the state. It has three wings roads and buildings ,water
resource ,drinking water headed by one chief engineer in each wing. PWD is mainly entrusted with
construction and maintenance of roads bridge and government buildings. The department also act as a
technical adviser to the state government.

WHAT IS A ROAD?????????
Road is a pathway used by the people to travel from one place to other place In a shortest
possible way with maximum riding comfort.
Why we needs roads???
It contributes in the following ways:-

1.It contribute to the economic development.

2.It contribute to the industrial development.
3.It help in the social and cultural development.
4.It interconnect all area and facilitate us to travel from
one place to another place.
WHY WE NEEDS GOOD
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM???

we need because of the :

1.Demand for a transport infrastructure is rising by around 10% a year.

2.Good transport connections have direct benefits to people businesses ,

the environment and overall the economy.

3.If good transport system are available in cities so that people can reach
to their respective destination within a time.

WHAT IS PAVEMENT ??
A pavement is structure whose function is to distribute the applied vehicle loads to the sub grade .

TYPES OF
PAVEMENT
1.FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
2. RIGID PAVEMENT
FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

Flexible pavement are composed

properly grade aggregate with bitumen/tar
as binder.
Strength depend upon interlocking of
aggregates friction and cohesion
It is constructed in number of layers.
Initial cost is very less
RIGID PAVEMENT

 Rigid pavements are those which contain

sufficient beam strength to able to bridge over
the localized sub grade failure and areas of in

adequate support .
WHAT IS EXPANSION JOINT ??

It is joint between two parts of a structure

permitting expansion from heat without
structural damage
What is Construction joint???

The construction joint are provided at locations where the construction

is stopped at the end of the day or for any other reason
A mix can be design in two ways nominal and design
mix

Nominal mix Design mix

1.A mix that is approximate and it is general for It is a performance based mix where choice of
every site condition and the mix ratio is fixed ingredients and proportioning are left to the designer
by indiancodes this allowed up to M20. to be decided the user has to specify only the
requirements of concrete in fresh as well as hardened
state. The requirement in fresh concrete are
workability and finishing characteristics whereas in
hardened concrete these are mainly the compressive
strength and durability.
Workability of concrete

Workability of concrete is the property of freshly mixed concrete which determines the case and
homogeneity with which it can be mixed , placed consolidated and finished as defined by ACI
standard.

Types of workability of concrete

1.Unworkable concrete
2.Medium workable
3.Highly workable concrete
Factors Affecting workability of concrete

1.Water cement ratio

2.Amount of cement and its properties
3.Aggregates grading
4.Temperature of the concrete mix
5.Humidity of the environment
6.Mode of compaction
7.Method of placement of concrete.
8.Method of transmission of concrete
Why slum test is performed ???

Concrete slum test or slum cone test is to determine the workability or consistency of concrete mix
prepared at the laboratory or the construction site during the progress of the work. The slum test is most
simple workability test for the concrete involves low cost and provide immediate results.
Procedure for concrete slum cone test.

1.Clean the internal surface of the slum cone

2.Place the mould on a horizontal smooth non porous
base plate.
3.Fill the mould with the prepared concrete mix in 4
approximately equal layers.
4.Each layers is temped by 25 times with tamping
rod, the tamping should penetrate into the underlying
layer.
5.Remove the access concrete and level the surface
with trowel.
6.Clean away the a11morter
water leaked out between the mould and the base
plate.
7.Raise the mould from the concrete immediately
and slowly in vertical direction.
8. Measure the slum difference between the height of
cone .
What is bitumen???
 A black viscous mixture of
hydrocarbons obtained naturally
or as a residue from petroleum
distillation.
 It is used for road surfacing and
roofing
VARIOUS BITUMEN TEST PERFORMED IN ROAD
CONSTRUCTION
1.Penetration test
2.Ductility test
3.Specific gravity test
4.Viscosity test
5.Water content test.
WHAT IS CAMBER???
 Camber is the slope provided to the road
surface in the traverse direction to drain
off the rainwater from the road surface.
WHY CAMBER IS PROVIDED ON ROAD???

1.To protect the road by preventing the entry of surface water into the sub grade soil through
pavement.

2.To prevent the entry of water into the bituminous pavement layers
3.To remove the rainwater from the pavement surface as quickly as possible and to allow the
pavement to get dry soon after the rain.
TYPES OF CAMBER

1.composite camber
2.sloped or straight camber
3.parabollic camber
ADVANTAGES OF CAMBER

 1.camber provides quick drainage of rainwater and thus saves the foundation course of
the road structure from weakening by percolation of rainwater to it through the road
surface.

 2.This prevents rainwater to accumulate in local shrinkage or depressions and forming

water pool on the road surface, which are disagreeable to the public as well as to the road
structure.
