VASECTOMY

INTRODUCTION

 It is a surgical procedure for male sterilization.


 Method of permanent birth control.
 During this, vas deferens are resected and cut ends are
ligated , so as to prevent sperm from entering into
urethra and thus prevent fertilization of female through
sexual intercourse.
HISTORY

 First vasectomy was performed on dog in 1823 by


Cooper from England.
 After a short time , R Harrison of London performed the
first human vasectomy in 1924.
 The first vasectomy program on national scale was
launched in 1954 in India.

 Permanent method of birth  Not immediately effective.

Theoretical effectiveness of vasectomy is 100%


But in reality it is only 99.85% effective.
Wait 15-20 ejaculations in order to clear semen
completely.
CASE SELECTION & INDICATIONS

 Family planning
 After prostatectomy , vasectomy is done to prevent retrograde
infection of testis.
 If any partner having health problem that would make pregnancy
unsafe.
 If one or both partner having any genetic disorder.
CONTRAINDICATIONS

 Local infection
 Coagulation disorders
 Inability to palpate and elevate both vas deferens
 Lack of adequate informed consent
