lines and H/2H for thin lines
Thin, with thick ends
Continuous Thick/Wide Line

1. Lines drawn to OUTER LINES

represent visible edges
and surface boundaries
2. Main representations in OUTER LINES
diagrams,
3. Margin/Boarder Lines

VISIBLE EDGES
Continuous Thin/Narrow Line

1. Imaginary lines of
intersection; grid lines,
2. Dimension lines (which
are generally terminated
at outer ends by filled EXTENSION
arrowheads touching LINES
extension lines HATCHING DIMENSION
3. Extension lines, LINES LINES
projection lines,
4. Leader lines, reference
lines; LEADER LINE
5. Hatching; outlines of
revolved sections; root of
screw threads;
Continuous Thin free hand Line

1. Thin and wavy lines drawn

freehand and are used to
show a short break, or
irregular element boundaries
(often chain-thin line also
used for the same purpose)

FREE HAND
LINE
Continuous thin line with zigzags

Long-break line

LONG-BREAK
1. These lines are thin ruled LINE
lines with short zigzags
within them. They are
drawn to show long
breaks.
2. If a long dimension as to
be represented on small
length without any scale
Dashed thick line

Dashed thick line

Line to show permissible of

surface treatment. (often to
act as a Dashed thin line)

LINES/EDGES
1. They are also called dotted
lines. They are of medium
thickness and made up of short
dashes of approximately equal
lengths of about 2 mm spaced at
equal distances of about 1 mm.
Chain thick line

Chain thick line

Indication of lines or surfaces to which

a special requirement applies.(special
treatment on the surface)
Chain thin line
CENTRE LINES/ AXIS
LINES

Chain thin line

Centre lines are drawn to indicate the

axes (of cylindrical, conical or spherical
objects or details, and also to show the
centres of circles and arcs.)

They are thin, long, chain lines composed

of alternately long and dot spaced
approximately 1 mm apart. The long
dashes are about 9 to 12 mm.
Chain thin line with Thick ends
CUTTING PLANE LINE

Chain thin line with thick ends

The location of a cutting

plane is shown by this line.
It is a long, thin chain line,
thick at ends only
