    An engine converts thermal or chemical energy from fuel into mechanical energy. There are two main types of engines: external combustion engines like steam engines where combustion occurs outside the engine cylinder, and internal combustion engines like petrol and diesel engines where combustion occurs inside the cylinder. Internal combustion engines can operate via either compression ignition in diesel engines where injected fuel slowly combusts in compressed hot air, or spark ignition in petrol engines where a fuel-air mixture explodes when ignited by a spark.

    developed by burning fuel into useful work.
    A. External Combustion Engine:-
    Example-Steam Engine.
    B. Internal Combustion Engine:-
    Example-Petrol Engine, diesel engine.
    External Combustion Engine

    Here the combustion uses heat in form of steam,


    which is generated in the boiler ,place entirely
    separate from the working cylinder.
    Internal Combustion Engine

    In this engine combustion of fuel takes place inside the


    engine cylinder and heat is generated within the
    cylinder of the engine.
     Compression Ignition Engine (diesel engine)
    Explosion takes place by slow
    combustion of injected fuel in the hot compressed
    air called as constant pressure combustion (CPC).
     Spark Ignition Engine (petrol engine)
    By rapid explosion of fuel mixture when
    it is ignited by spark called as constant volume
    combustion (CVC).
