3 Measures of
Relative Position
Measures of relative position are conversions of
values to show where a given value stands in
relation to other values of the same grouping
Learning Plots :
Z Scores
 Percentiles
 Quartiles
 Box and Whisker Plot
 Stem-and-Leaf Diagrams
Z-Score
 Simply put, a z-score is the number
of standard deviations from the mean a data
point is. But more technically it’s a measure
of how many standard deviations below or
above the population mean a raw score is. A
z-score is also known as a standard
score and it can be placed on a normal
distribution curve. Z-scores range from -3
standard deviations (which would fall to the
far left of the normal distribution curve) up
to +3 standard deviations (which would fall
to the far right of the normal distribution
curve). In order to use a z-score, you need
to know the mean μ and also the population
standard deviation σ.
PERCENTILES
Percentile or centile is a
value or number that
represents a percentage
position on a range or list
of data – the person or
thing at that number of
value is above that number
in percentage.
QUARTILES
Quartiles in statistics are
values that divide your data
into quarters.
Difference between a quarter and a
quartile :

There’s a slight difference between a

quarter and quartile. A quarter is the
whole slice of pizza, but a quartile is
the mark the pizza cutter makes at
the end of the slice.
BOX AND WHISKER
PLOTS

- a graphic way to display

the median, quartiles,
and extremes of a data
set on a number line to
show the distribution of
the data.
STEM and LEAF DIAGRAMS
A stem-and-leaf diagram, also called
a stem-and-leaf plot, is a diagram that
quickly summarizes data while
maintaining the individual data points.
In such a diagram, the "stem" is a
column of the unique elements of data
after removing the last digit.
