 EARLY LIFE
BORN IN 1784 NEAR CORNWELL IN ENGLAND.

SON OF CHRISTOPHER BUCKINGHAM.

HIS YOUTH WAS SPENT AT SEA

IN 1797 he was captured by the french held as prisioner of war at corunna.

In 1818 he arrived in calcutta.

 CALCUTTA JOURNAL
 On september 22,1818 Buckingham published a newspaper named" the calcutta
journal or literary gazette".
 It was a bi- weekly paper
 Had eight pages.
 It was concluded to be "well conducted","independent'and "cleaver".
 It laid more emphasis on uplifting the issues of common people,news of local
conditions and bringing light to the cruel colonial rule.
 And purified its content from making criticism,fashion,advertisement,gossips
and anglo social scandals.
 CONTRIBUTION TO
INDIAN JOURNALISM
• He started calcutta journal which was a main turning point
in Indian journalism as his paper was a way different from
the first newspaper of Hicky.
• He criticised the British colonial rule in india and brought
out the loops in their cruel rule.
• He had the opinion that free press is require to keep a check
on the working of the government.
• HIS calcutta journal with the first issue was acknowledged
the best produced newspaper for its content and
presentation.
• In 1921 he started the first daily newspaper.
• His writings to protest for Indian gained him many
opponents from officials of the company .
• He did not even spare official like chief justice,the governor,
the lord of Bishop.

TRUE FATHER OF INDIAN JOURNALISM AS:-

• He founded the newspaper calcutta journal on
1818.
• He used his paper to spread public awarness,to
uphold public problem criticise the government.
• It contained social issues , he also spread
awarness about the social reforms.
• He started the paper to bring the true essence
of journalism in India and believed in freedom of
press.

1. He started the first newspaper Bengal gazette.
2. It was a tool used by him to take revenge from
british officials.
3. His paper contained gossips,
scandals,advertisement.
4. He started the paper not for public awarness or
to showcase journalism but rather to gain
profit.
