UNIT 11: QUADRILATERALS

INTRODUCTION TO POLYGONS
OBJECTIVE

To review and study the

properties of polygons.
POLYGONS

A closed figure in a 2-D plane,

that meets the following…
1. Formed by 3 or more sides, no curves!
2. All sides connect at the vertex.

POLYGONS

HOW DO WE CLASSIFY POLYGONS?

POLYGONS

WE CLASSIFY POLYGONS BY THE

NUMBER OF SIDES!!!
Sides Name

3 triangle
4 quadrilateral
5 pentagon
6 hexagon
7 heptagon
8 octagon
9 nonagon
10 decagon
11 undecagon
12 dodecagon
POLYGONS

ANY POLYGONS WITH MORE

THAN 12 SIDES… #-gon.

(EXAMPLE: 32 sides –> 32-gon)

POLYGONS

We also classify polygons

by…

intersecting lines extended

by their sides.
POLYGONS
A polygon is convex
whenever no line
containing a side of the
polygon intersects
the interior of the
polygon.
POLYGONS

A polygon is concave if
the line intersects the
interior.

REGULAR POLYGON

A convex polygon with

all sides and angles
congruent.

REGULAR POLYGON

“Regular” is just another

word for equilateral
AND equiangular.

QUADRILATERAL
“QUADS”

We’re going to turn our

attention to the
quadrilateral to discuss
the MOST basic property.
QUADRILATERAL
