ABOUT AMMONIA GAS

 Ammonia is the gas formed from nitrogen and hydrogen by

various processes.

 N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3

 Ammonia is colorless ,alkaline gas lighter than air & possesses a

unique penetration odour .
VARIOUS SECTIONS FOR PRODUCTION
OF AMMONIA
 DESULPHURIZATION SECTION

 REFORMING SECTION

 SHIFT SECTION

 CO2 REMOVEL SECTION

 METHANATION SECTION

 SYNTHESIS SECTION
STEAM

NATURAL GAS
AMMONIA

RAW WATER
AMMONIA
ATMOSPHERIC AIR PLANT
CARBON
ELECTRIC POWER - DIOXIDE
DESULPHURIZATION SECTION
 The Natural gas contains up to 10 vol. ppm sulphur
compound.

 The gas must be desulphurized in order to avoid the

sulphur, which poisoning the catalyst.

 Gas contains H2S & sulphur compound .

 Cobalt molybdenum & zinc oxide catalyst are used in this

process.
DESULPHURIZATION SECTION
 Desulphurization takes place in two stages .

 The sulphur content are converted in to H2S in

hydrogenator & H2S is absorbed in sulphur absorber.

 After desulphurization only 0.1 wt ppm sulphur content are

observed.

 After this Natural gas is fed to the reformers.

Reforming section
It consist of two reformers :-
1. Primary Reformer
2. Secondary Reformer

 In this section , desulphurized gas is converted into synthesis gas

by catalytic reforming of hydrocarbon mix. With steam and air.

 The hydrocarbon in the natural gas is converted into H2 &

carbon oxides

Operating pressure - 34kg/cm2

Temp. - 1100-1200 deg. Celsius

Reforming section
Shift section
 It has two converters :
1. High temp. converter.
2. Low temp. Converter.

 In this section , CO is converted into CO2 & H2 by

following reaction using Cu promoted iron based catalyst.

 Co + H2o Co2 + H2 + Heat

CO2 REMOVEL SECTION
 The CO2 is removed from the gas by absorption in MEA
solution which contains an activator.

 The activator increases the mass transfer rate of CO2 from

the gas phase to liquid phase.

 The gas leaving the CO2 removal section has a CO2 content
of 17.7mole%.

 Than CO2 stripping is done by using the lean solution.

Synthesis section
 The reaction takes place are :

3H2 + N2 2NH3 + Heat

 Only one part of H2 & N2 is converted into NH3 when the

gas is pass through the catalyst bed.

 High pressure & low temp. favors the high concentration of

ammonia.
