    The Philippine film industry began in 1897 when foreign businessmen started showing films in Manila. It grew more popular after the 1912 film on Jose Rizal. The first Filipino producer was Jose Nepomuceno, known as the "Father of Philippine Movie" for his film "Dalagang Bukid". Early Philippine films had outdated technology and limited budgets compared to American movies, but found an audience by using the Tagalog language. Major studios emerged in the 1950s and various film awards were established, while alternative independent films also emerged.
