Powered exoskeletons, also called powered suits, are wearable mobile machines powered by electronic motors and hydraulics that enhance human strength and endurance. The first prototype was developed in 1890 and used compressed gas to power movements. Throughout the 20th century, various military and industrial exoskeleton designs were proposed but not realized due to technological limitations. Today, exoskeletons are being developed for medical, military, industrial, and emergency response applications, but challenges remain around power supply limitations and adapting designs for different user sizes.

It is a wearable mobile machine that is powered by a system of electronic motors, hydraulics etc. First exo skeleton In 1890 first exoskeleton like device was designed by russsian “NICHOLAS YAGIN”. It used energy stored in compressed gas bags to assist in movements. This device was a set of walking, jumping, and running assisted apparatus. In 1917 “C.KELLEY” US inventor developed a exoskeleton what he called a “Pedo meter” which is operated on steam power. In 1960 “Hardiman” was co-developed by general electric and US armed forces In 1985 an engineer of ‘Los Alamos National Laboratary’ proposed an exoskeleton called “Pitman”,a powered suit of armor. The design included brain scanning sensors in helmet and was considered as too futuristic, was never built. In 1985 a life suit is designed by monty reed,a US army ranger who had broken his back in a parachute accident.while recovering he read Robert Heinlens science fiction novel and got inspired about the lead role suit. 2001 he began working and in 2005 he wore that suit participated in a race,it can walk 1.6km on full charge. Applications Medical : exo skeletons can be useful to the people who lost their legs. They help with rehabilitation of patients suffering from stroke or spinal and injury. The ESKO GT made by esko bionics to be approved by the US food and drug administration (FDA) for stroke patient. Military: Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has developed and Military suits: Industrial suits: Industrial working suits: Fire fighters: Battery powered retro suits Army retro suit Limitations: Power supply: It is the biggest problem facing for designers of
powered exoskeletons,if it is to be worn in field.
Batteries require frequent replacement or
recharging and may risk explosion due to
thermal runaway. Skeleton: Metals like steel and aluminium heavy, soft exo
skeleton that attach and control devices to
flexible clothing are also under development. Adaptation to user size variations etc. THANK Q
