STATES OF MATTER
The Kinetic Theory Of Matter

Matter Can be defined as anything that has MASS and takes

up SPACE.
All Matter is believed to be made up of tiny particles that are
in constant motion due to the KINETIC ENERGY they contain.
The Particles can be ATOMS, MOLECULES or IONS
Evidence For The Kinetic Theory Of
Matter

Evidence for the Kinetic theory of matter can be seen from

several Phenomena:
Diffusion
Osmosis
Brownian Motion
Diffusion

Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of HIGH

CONCENTRATION to an area of LOW CONCENTRATION , until
the particles are evenly distributed.
Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water particles from an area of
higher water concentration to an area of low water
concentration, through a semipermeable membrane.
Brownian Motion

The erratic random movement of microscopic particles in a

fluid, as a result of continuous bombardment from molecules
of the surrounding medium.
States OF Matter

Matter can exist in 3 states and a fourth which has been discovered
by scientist most recently, these states are:
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma
States OF Matter
Solid: Particle are close together in a very orderly manner. The
force of attraction between particles are strong so the movement
is limited around a fixed point.
Liquid: Particle are further apart. The arrangement is less orderly
. Due to the forces of attraction being weaker the particles are
able to slip over each other.
Gas: Particle are very far apart an have little to no arrangement.
The force of attraction between particles are so weak that
particles are able to move freely in all directions at high speeds.
