Highest recognition the Philippine
government can give to a person of the
arts.
The award was created through
Presidential Proclamation No. 1001, s. 1972
Covers the following categories;
architecture and the allied arts, dance,
film and broadcast arts, literature, music,
theater and visual arts.
Artists that are acclaimed for their
exemplary and outstanding works.
Artists are given awards as recognition for
their contribution and enrichment of
Philippine culture and arts.
Their bodies of work has become a
benchmark and has been influential to
other artists in developing and honing
their craft.
How do you become a National Artist?
These are the qualifications for the nominees:
The artist must be a Filipino citizen or at least
at the time of nomination. An artist who has
passed on can still be nominated as long as
he/she was a Filipino before they died.
The artist should have contributed “in
building a Filipino sense of nationhood” as
seen in their works.
The artist should have lead the way in new and
creative expression or style, separating
themselves from others and in turn influencing
other generations of artists
The artist’s works should be noteworthy and an
embodiment o excellence, further enriching
their chosen field of creative expression.
The artist should be critically acclaimed and
accepted by legitimate institutions and peers.
Other than the prestigious recognition,
National Artists also receives other benefits
such as:
The title and rank of a National Artist.
Medal bearing the insignia of National Artist as
well as citation.
A cash gift of P 100,000 to the living Artist and P
75,000 for those who were recognized after their
death, which will be given to the heir of the
awardee
Monthly pension with medical and
hospitalization benefits
Life insurance to those who are still qualified
State funeral and internment at the Libingan
ng mga Bayani
A reserved place at state functions,
awarding ceremonies, and cultural events.
