Newton’s Third

Law of Motion
What are Newton’s 1st and 2nd
laws of motion?
-Newton’s 1st law: the Law of Inertia
-An object at rest will remain at rest until
acted upon by an unbalanced force.
-An object in motion will remain in motion
until acted upon by a balanced force.
-THINGS WANT TO KEEP DOING WHAT
THEY ARE ALREADY DOING
-Newton’s 2nd law: F=MA
EQ: What are action-reaction
pairs?
Newton’s 3 rd Law
•Newton’s first two laws of motion explain how the
motion of a single object changes.
• Newton’s third law describes something else
that happens when one object exerts a force
on another object.
• Newton’s Third Law of Motion states: for
every action, there is an equal but opposite
reaction.
Action - Reaction
• The forces exerted by two objects on each
other are often called an action-reaction
force pair.

• Action and reaction force pairs don’t cancel

because they act on different objects.
Keep these questions in mind for
the video we are about to watch
1. When Pedro and Alexander pushed against
each other what happened?
2. After the battery pack was added did they
move the same distance?
3. What law explains what happened once
the battery pack was added?
Examples
What happened?
1. When Pedro and Alexander pushed against
each other what happened?
2. After the battery pack was added did they
move the same distance?
3. What law explains what happened once
the battery pack was added?
Example:
• A wall and a person, which has more mass?
• If I push on the wall what happens? Why?
Identify the
action-reaction
pair when
someone jumps.
Example:
• Identify the action-reaction pair when a
space rocket blasts off from Earth
Balloon demo: Identify the
action-reaction pair.
So….
• The air leaving
the balloon is the
action/reaction
force.

• The balloon
moving forward
is the
action/reaction
force
Review

1. Explain Newton’s third law.

2. If they are “equal but opposite,” why don’t
action-reaction pairs cancel?
Summarize
Action-reaction pairs are ______________.
We identify action-reaction pairs in Newton’s
_____ law.
An example of action-reaction pairs are in
_______________. _________ would be the
action and __________ would be the reaction.
