Definition
Fantasy is a general in literature that includes
magical and / or supernatural elements as part
of a plot setting or theme. Mythology folklore
often play a strong part in fantasy literature.
Fantasy works combined with real world or with
second fantastical reality such as Harry Potter
series where the protagonist grows up in
contemporary England and is only introduced
to the world of magic at the age of 10.

Fantasy is composed of unrealistic elements

such as mystical creatures too - a good example
would be a mermaid. Some sailors in the 1700’s
and the 1800’s claimed to see a half woman
and half fish. While there is no physical
evidence of the same.

Fantasy literature has been distinguished into

two major types they are high fantasy [Lord of
the rings] and low fantasy [The Harry Potter
series].
High fantasy and low
fantasy
High fantasy is set in an alternative fictional
secondary world rather than the real or primary
world. The second world is usually internally
constructed, but its rules may differ from those
of a primary world. Good versus Evil is
common theme in the high fantasy and the
character of evil is often an important theme in
the works of higher fantasy such as the Lord of
the Rings.

Low fantasy or intrusion fantasy is a sub-genre

of fantasy fiction where magical events intrude
on the otherwise normal world.
Origin (word “fantasy” and
literature)

While fairy tales are ancient, dating back to the

bronze age. Fantasy turns out to be a revival
moment rising from the grave of the recent
dead. Around 1945 fantasy literature took a
flight, till date soaring up and up.

Ancient near east, the epic of Gilgamesh was

written over generations following the reign of
King Gilgamesh and it is as a mythologized
version of his life. This is one the oldest extract
of fantasy literature. From here, many writers
took the idea of fantasy literature.
