Term
External ear:
Consist of auricle and external auditory canal
Inner ear:
Consist of cochlea, vestibule and semicircular
canals
Middle ear:
Temporal lobe that consist the three ossicles
Labyrinthitis

• Inflammation of inner ear


• Can be bacterial or viral in origin
• Complication of otitis media
Risk factors

Recent viral illness or ear infection


Drink large quantities of alcohol
Allergies
Smoking
Certain medication ( aspirin, lasix, phenytoin)
Injury to ear
Diagnostic test

• Hearing test

• Blood culture
Diagnostic test

• Physical examination of the ear


Signs and symptoms

• Nausea and vomiting • Possibly tinnitus

• Sudden onset of vertigo

• Hearing loss
Treatment
Pharmacologic
Vestibular suppressant (meclizine)
Anti emetic medication
Intravenous antibiotic therapy

Therapeutic
Drink plenty of water
Promote rest
Avoid alcohol
Avoid bright lights
Treatment continuation

Surgical treatment
Myringotomy
Myringotomy

Acute pain related to

Impaired sensory perception: auditory related to altered sensory


reception

Risk for trauma related to impaired balance

Disturbed body image related to alteration n body function
