Global Trends
 The total copper mine production in the world is 20
million metric tons.
 Top producers include Chile, Peru and China.
 Chile produces nearly 1/3rd of the total copper mine
production in the world.
 Usage of Copper will be 26 million tons a year by
2040,double that of today.

Indian Trends

 Copper mine production in India is about 2% of the total


copper mine production in the world.
 Major copper belts in India : Khetri copper belt in
Rajasthan, Singhbhum copper belt in Jharkhand,
malanjkhand copper belt in Madhya Pradesh.

Leading exporters and importers of copper ore , 2018

 Copper ore- 41st most traded product.

 Copper – 1186th most complex product.

 The largest exporters of copper are Chile ,


Germany and United States.

 Chile exports 13.3% of the total copper exports.

 The largest importers of copper are china ,


Germany and United States.

 China imports 27.4% of the total copper


imports.

Can we run out of mine ????

 Highly improbable.
 Recycling , innovation and mining exploration
contribute to long term availability of mine
 In the period 2007-2017 , 192 million tons of copper
have been mined.
 In the same period, reserves have grown by 300
millions.

 There is a rapid decrease in copper price till


2016.
 After 2016 , there is an increase in copper
price.
 The copper price is expected to reach 7000
dollars per million ton by 2030.
