CAGAYAN VALLEY
is an administrative region in
the Philippines located in the
northeastern portion of Luzon.
It is composed of five
provinces: Batanes,
Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva
Vizcaya, and Quirino. The
region has four cities:
Cauayan, Ilagan, Santiago,
and Tuguegarao.
Religion: Catholic
(76.15%)
Cordillera mountain range
(west), Sierra Madre (east),
Caraballo Mountains (south),
Luzon Strait (north).

culture and as the economic center of the region
• referred to by locals as Tugue, is a 3rd
class component city in the Philippines.
• capital of the province of Cagayan and the regional and
institutional center of Cagayan Valley (Region II). Major
urban center in the Northeastern Luzon, a primary
growth center and one of the fastest growing cities in
the Philippines.
• Dubbed as the “Gateway to the Ilocandia and the
Cordilleras”.
• Based on the first legend called taraw; a specie of
palm tree.
• The most accepted version is the Ibanags' reply to
the Spaniards when the latter asked for the name
of the place — Tuggi gari yaw ("this was cleared
by fire").

05 Cagayan
Description: is the largest province on the island of Luzon in
land area. It's also one of the top provinces that produce
rice, mung beans, and other local produce. The province is
known as the “rice and corn granary of Luzon".
Capital: Ilagan city
ISABELA Boundery: provinces of Cagayan to the north, Kalinga to the

northwest, Mountain Province to the central-west, Ifugao
and Nueva Vizcaya to the southwest, Quirino and Aurora to
the south, and the Philippine Sea to the east.
Nickname: Queen Province of the Philippines, Rice Bowl
of the North, Corn Capital of the Philippines, Sentro ng
AGRIkultura.
Festival: Bambanti Festival (“Bambanti” is the Ilocano term
for scarecrow) and Binallay Festival (It’s a sticky rice flour
cake wrapped in banana leaves that originates from the City
of Ilagan, where it’s considered as a Holy Week delicacy
because it’s a tradition for the people of Ilagan to fast during
Holy Week and eat nothing but binallay.)

HISTORY OF Stone age:
It is believed that the history of the province dates back over 25,999
years ago with a Stone-Age race of dark skinned kinky haired pygmies
whose descendants, the Nomadic Aetas (Negritos), can still be found
roaming the mountains and forests of Eastern Isabela today. The
Indonesians arrived 5,000 years ago, followed by three waves of Malays

between 200 BC and 1,500 AD. These pagan ancestors of the Ibanags,
Gaddangs, Yogads, Kalingas and other original tribes of the Valley built
a civilization based on corn agriculture and organized around the
fundamental political unit, the barangay
Spaniards:
-16th to 17th The Spaniards arrived introduced Christianity, encomienda
(forerunner of the municipality) and tobacco monopoly.
-18th under the leadership of Dabo and Marayag.
-19th to early 20century with the arrival of the Ilocanos who came in
large numbers. They now constituted the largest group in the province.
Other ethnic groups followed and Isabela became the “melting pot of
the north”.
-On May 1, 1856 the rice and corn granary of the Philippines - the
province of Isabela was FORMED.

PANCIT CABAGAN

Description: is one of the beautiful provinces found
in the Philippines. It is also known as the “Home of
the Winds”.
The northernmost and the smallest province in the
BATANES country.

Festival: Ivatan language, “payuhan” stands for
cooperation which is truly evident in this 5-day
event every June. In this event, a province-wide

the Ivatan Olympics to pay tribute to their native

HISTORY

-1686 and 1719, the Spaniards sent Dominican friars on expedition to the
Batanes islands.

-It was named Provincia de la Concepcion with Joseph Huelva y Melgarjo
as its first governor.
-formal annexation of Batanes to the Spanish Colonial State became official
only on June 26, 1783 under Governor Jose Basco y Vargas.
-This was over two centuries after the formal colonization of the Philippines
by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565.
- It was the last territory added to the Philippines.
- decreed in Rule No. 52 that no house should be built more than half of a
league or 2,786 meters from the nearest church.
- Santo Domingo de Basco was named from the late Governor Basco.
- September 17, 1898 - Batanes Islands remained under the Spanish rule
until when the Ivatan Katipunan won a glorious victory and it became
independent within the Philippine Republic

Description: Quirino is a primarily agricultural town
situated in the Mallig Plains region. The town is
known for its sprawling flat lands used for
growing crops such as palay or rice, peanut, corn,
QUIRINO tobacco and vegetables. The smallest and

youngest province in Cagayan Valley, might as well
be its proverbial lily because of its hidden natural
wonders.

Founded: June 18, 1966
Boundary: It is bounded to the north by Delfin
Albano, Mallig to the northwest, Roxas to the
southwest, Burgos and Gamu to the south and
Ilagan City to the east.

Festival: Panagdadapun festival-Panagdadapun is
• Before, Quirino was the forest region of the province
of Nueva Vizcaya, inhabited by tribal groups known as

huts at the heart of the jungle.
• June 18, 1966, Republic Act 4734 was enacted, constituting

the municipalities of Diffun, Saguday, Aglipay, and Maddela
(all of Nueva Vizcaya province) into a new sub-province to
be known as "Quirino", named after President Elpidio
Quirino.
• (June 21, 1969) Republic Act 5554 - municipality
of Cabarroguis was created (now the provincial capital
town), which was taken from portions of Diffun, Saguday,
and Aglipay.
• Republic Act 6394, authored by then
Congressman Leonardo B. Perez, was passed on September
10, 1971 further amending RA 5554 and separating the
sub-province of Quirino from its mother province, Nueva

• As the historian and missionary Jose Burgues, said, "The
old Cagayan Valley comprises the province of Cagayan,
Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya as well as the military
Districts of Apayao, Itaves, Quiangan, Cayapa and
Bintangan, plus the area of the Sierra Madre to the
Pacific Ocean in the said trajectory.

• During World War II at Balete Pass in Nueva Vizcaya, the


retreating Japanese under General Tomoyuki Yamashita
dug in and held on for three months against the
