THE NEXT BIG THING IS REALLY SMALL

NANOTECHNOLOGY
Introduction
• “Nano” in Greek means – dwarf.
• Nanotechnology (NT) is the production
and use of materials with purposely
engineered features close to the atomic
or molecular scale.
• 'Nano-technology' mainly consists of the
processing of, separation, consolidation,
and deformation of materials by one
atom or by one molecule."
History of Nanotechnology
• "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom".
By Richard Feynman
• Moore’s Law
The comparative size of a nanometer to a meter is the
same as that of a marble to the size of the earth
How Nanotechnology works????

• The world of
nanotechnology is the
realm of atoms &
nanostructures.
• A nanometer(nm) is one
billionth of a meter(m)
i.e. one millionth of a
millimeter(mm).
• Nanoscale= point where
we can actually
assemble something.
Nanostructures
 Nanowires:
• Wires with a very small diameter.
• Future use: Transistors for computer chips
& other electronic devices.
 Fullerene:
• is any molecule composed entirely of carbon atoms
• Spherical fullerenes: Bucky balls.
• cylindrical fullerenes: Carbon Nanotubes.
• Carbon Nanotubes:
Nanosized cylinder of Carbon-atoms.
Future Use: Can be used to make six times
lighter cars & planes.
Application & Use of Nanotechnology
• Medicine
- Drug Delivery
- Tissue Engineering

• Information and Communication

- Memory Storage
- Displays
- Quantum Computers

• Consumer Goods
- Food
-Household
-Cosmetics
Advantages
• Nanotechnology lets us make almost every
manufactured product faster, lighter, and
stronger
• The industrial advantages
• The medical advantages -stops aging
process, immortality and universal
immunity like aids, flu and end of sickness.
Disadvantages
• The biggest disadvantage is that
Nanotechnology is actually very expensive,
• Its also very hard to create
• just a single molecule of powder or dust
can damage the whole thing while it is
being created/ formed.
Disadvantages
• In relation to health problems, it is so
minute that its existence in the hand is
much unnoticed.
• Global monetary crisis, loss of jobs,
diamonds become worthless, atomic
weapons more destructive and accessible.
FUTURE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

• Molecular manufacturing.
• Eradication of Famines.
• Nanosurgeons.
• Positive effect on Environment.
• Nanogenerator.
• Impact on medical industry-nanorobots.
•Bottom- up method of nano technology
unemployment & threat .
