This document discusses replacing radiographic testing (RT) with phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) for inspecting welds on small diameter boiler tubes. It outlines the functional, technical, and commercial advantages of PAUT over RT, including no radiation hazards, digital record keeping, higher sensitivity, and lower costs. It also describes a small tube scanner suitable for inspecting welds on tubes from 0.84 to 4.5 inches in diameter and the ability of PAUT equipment to detect and size very small defects.

RT Are you still using RT services for small dia boiler tubes weld inspection
Please review again PAUT features and advantages
and then decide between RT and PAUT PAUT vs RT – Functional Advantages Many functional advantages from switching from RT to AUT: No radiation No licensing No chemical wastes Less subjective data interpretation Does not interfere with production in the work place Depth and height sizing that is not possible with RT Permanent inspection records to replace film Overcoming Access limitations Better detection and sizing of flaws Easier characterization of flaws and geometry Reducing dependence on the skill of the operator to include consistent results in manual UT applications. Ability to record digital data and retain inspection PAUT vs RT – TECHNICAL advantages Many technical advantages for PAUT, especially combined Phased Arrays and TOFD: Better detection of planar defects Tailored inspections Can size in vertical plane for ECA Lower reject rates Fast and cost effective Results auditable Well demonstrated for simple welds, e.g. butt welds. PAUT vs RT – Commercial Advantages Higher licensing costs for RT Major headaches in shipping and storing isotopes Higher cost in waste disposal, storage etc. Cheaper PAUT Inspection Cost No film cost in PAUT No chemical cost in PAUT No production interruption in PAUT POWER PLANT BOILER TUBE INSPECTION Power Plant Tube Weld Inspection EQUIPMENT AND SCANNER PAUT is approved by all codes including ASME, API, BS, EN, AWS as a replacement to Radiographic Testing.
PAUT can also be used as supplementary technique to
corrosion mapping and in-service inspections SMALL TUBE SCANNER This scanner is designed to perform non destructive inspections of welds on industrial and commercial cylindrical parts. The COBRA Scanner is a manual scanner for pipes with diameters ranging from 21.3 mm to 114.3 mm i.e. 0.84 in. to 4.50 in. It is designed to provide the encoded position of the probes on the circumference around the pipes. This scanner is specially designed for small dia tubes or pipes between 0.84 inch dia to 4.50 inch dia Inspection and Testing of Small dia pipes Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Boiler pipes Small dia pipes Pipe to Pipe joints Pipe to valve, pipe to flange Pipe to T joints. Production capability of 100 joints per shift with 2 manpower. Some Site Photos Of Boiler Tube Inspection Some site Photos Of Boiler Tubes Inspection Calibration Tube of similar material Sensitivity of PAUT Equipment
The Olympus Omni scan PAUT equipment is very sensitive and
the sizing of the defect can be sized for 0.01 mm
Sometimes the defect which is detected using PAUT equipment is
not detected in Radiography inspection due to its sensitivity and other factors.
We have experienced many conversation with our clients at
various sites when we are detecting defects and it is not reflecting in radiography testing,
PAUT inspection defects can be analyzed and confirmed using
the 4 dimension view such as A-scan, S-scan, B-scan, and C-scan. Scanning display views Thank You
