 Definition of Pollution
 Types of Pollution
 Air Pollution
 Marine Pollution
 Soil Pollution
 Solid Waste Management
When harmful substances contaminate the
environment it is called pollution.
Or

Undesirable change in the physical chemical

or biological characteristics of components of
the environment is known as environmental
pollution.
 Air Pollution
 Marine Pollution
 Soil Pollution
It is an atmospheric condition In which certain
substances such as gases, particulate matter, radio
active substances etc. present in concentrations
which can cause undesirable effects on man and his
environment.
1. NATURAL SOURCES

 Volcanic eruption
 Forest fire
 Salty spray from ocean
 Dust storms
 Marshy land

2. MANMADE SOURCES

 Industrial units
 Thermal power plant
 Fossil fuel burning
 Mining
 Aircraft
 Domestic burning of woods Thermal power

Some measures that can be adopted in this
direction are:
 Using unleaded petrol
 Using fuels with low sulphur
 Encouraging people to use public transport,
walk and use a cycle as opposed to private
vehicles
 Ensure that houses, schools, playgrounds are not
located at busy streets
 Plant trees along busy streets as they remove
particulates, carbon dioxide and absorb noise
Pollution of oceans caused by sewage sludge,
industrial effluent, detergents, agro wastes etc.
is called marine pollution.
 Run off waters
 Dumping of wastes
 Oil spills
 Oil ballasts
 Oil drilling
 Discharging industrial effluents
 Preventing dumping of waste
 Oil ballast not be dumped in the sea
 Oil and grease from service stations should be
processed and reused
Contamination of soil with sewage sludge,
industrial sludge, radioactive wastes etc. are
called soil pollution.
 Human health
 Loss of soil fertility
 Contaminate ground water
 Desertification
 Solid waste should be properly collected and
disposed off
 Mining process should be reduced
 Bio degradable fertilizers and pests should be
used
 Effluents should treated before discharging
 Industrial
 Municipal
 Agriculture
 Medical
 Mining
 Sewage sludge
INDUSTRAIL WASTES MUNICIPAL WASTES

 Packing materials  Degradable : Vegetable

 Acids waste, Pea shells and
 Fly ash egg shells etc.
 Chemicals  Non biodegradable :
Polythene bags
 Radioactive waste
 Dyes
 Reduction in use of raw materials
 Reuse of waste materials
 Recycling of materials
