About Arkema
3 Arkema plant in Navi Mumbai
Headquartered in Paris, France,
Arkema was originally a part of
Total Chemicals which split and
became independent in October
2004.

Arkema Chemicals
Mumbai
Built over a huge area of 22,000
sq.m, this facilty prepares
• Alkyd resins
• Acrylic resins
• Polyamide resins
• Polyester resins

Steps For Production
5
 Charging of raw materials
1. Liquid state raw materials are charged from ground level using pumps.
2. Crystal state or powdery state raw materials can directly be charged into the reactors.
 Reaction and Mixing
1. Acrylic resin production requires premixing and peroxide initiating tanks before sending to
reaction tank. Other resins don’t require these steps.
 Reflux System/ Distillation Process
1. The total system consists of a packed column for evaporation, a condenser and a separator
 Dilution and Blending
1. Dilution step with solvent is required for thinning because the product formed is very
viscous.
2. A few more raw materials are added here for adjusting it to batch specifications.
 Packaging
1. The resins have different filtration process depending upon their viscosity.
2. The filtered liquid first gets recycled a few times to ensure the purity of the liquid and is
then either sent for storage or to trucks for consumers.

Thermopack
Analysis
Thermopack is the
thermic fluid heater which
heats the thermic fluid
and transports sit to the
entire plant for heating the
reactors and heat
exchangers, etc.

Calculations:
ΔT = TOUTLET - TINLET = 270.4666 - 261.1333 = 9.3333℃
q = Energy consumption between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm
Total flow rate = 63.6667 + 34.8667 + 32.0333 = 130.5667m3/hr
Tavg = 265.8℃ q = 165022 - 164439 = 583 m3/day = 583/7 m3/hr
Cp265.625℃ = 0.6635 KCal/kgK
= 83.2857 m3/hr
ρ265.625℃ = 703 kg/m3
ɳ = Q/ q × GCV
ṁ = 703 × 130.5667 = 91,788.39 kg/hr
= 5,68,412.8737 / 83.2857 × 8500 = 80.29%
Q = ṁ Cp ΔT = 91,788.39 × 0.6635 × 9.3333 = 5,68,412.8737 KCal/hr
8 Utilities
 Heat energy
1. Main source of heat for heating the reactors, blenders and supply lines comes
from the heating oil from the thermic fluid heater.
2. Other heat related utilities are heat exchangers. Total three type of heat echangers
are there: U-tube type heat exchanger, plate type and shell and and tube type
heat exchanger.

 Cooling water
1. Cooling water is mainly circulated at room temperature to reactors as the
reactions are exothermic.
2. Cooling tower used is an induced draft counter current cooling tower.
3. A refrigerator using R32 refrigerant is used to cool water down to 10˚C for
circulating it in chillers for powder coating plant.
9 Utilities
 Air compressor
1. Air compressor is used to compress the air as well as to produce nitrogen which is
used as an inert gas for reactors and all other vessels.
2. It is a screw type compressor having two PSA towers to allow pressure equalization
where the gas leaving the vessel being depressurized is used to create partial
pressure in the second vessel.

 Pumps and Valves

1. For viscous fluids positive displacement pumps are used but cannot be used for long
distance transportation.
2. For fluids like water, centrifugal pumps are used as it is to be transported throughout
the plant.
3. Valves like gate valve, ball valve, check valve, butterfly valves and Y-strainer are
used.
10 Conclusion
 In conclusion the industrial training at Arkema Chemicals India Private Ltd.
was helpful in many ways.

 I was able to learn about the mechanical operations and processes involved
in the manufacture of resins.

 This training helped me improve my skills in gathering information.

 The project helped me in learning how to calculate the equipment

efficiency and also its energy output.

 I also polished my skills in using softwares like ConceptDraw, microsoft

excel, word and also microsoft power point.
