The Building Blocks of Life

Amoeba sp.
Learning Objectives

What things you should do?

 Analyze the concept of cells as the smallest structural and functional
unit of all living things
 Define the meaning of the cells and the chemical components that
arrange the cell
 Identify the structure and function of each part of the cell
 Mention the organic and anorganic component that compile cells
Cell

 The cell is the basic structural, functional, and

biological unit of all known living organisms. A cell
is the smallest unit of life
 Organisms can be classified as:
• unicellular (consisting of a single cell; including
bacteria) or
• multicellular (including plants and animals)
humans contain more than 10 trillion (1013) cells
Cell Components

 Plasma membrane
 Cytoplasm
 Cytoskeleton
 Genetic material
 Nucleus
 Mitochondria
 Endoplasmic reticulum
 Golgi apparatus
 Vacuoles
 Ribosomes
Organic and inorganic component

 Organic Component
Organice = synthesised by living things; contains carbon combined with
hydrogen
Such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids

 Inorganic Component
Inorganic molecules do not contain carbon combined with hydrogen and
they do not form long chains
Such as water, mineral salts, and some gases
