FAMILY RELATIONS

As narrated by
Indigenous Oral traditions
INTRODUCTION
Filipinos hold distinct values that are still evident until
today; such as familial piety and “utang na loob”

In the past, these values were also upheld

We find out how these values were imprinted onto Filipino

families through the stories and myths that were passed on
from generation to generation

PINYA
kailangan niya. Kinabukasan, naglaho si Pina at
mayroong tumubong halaman at nagkaroon ng bunga na
may maraming mata. Tinawag nila itong Piña.

tinawanan lang ito ni Amba. Pinagbigyan ito ni Amba at nagulat
siya sa kagalingan ng matandang babae. Pinarusahan si Amba
dahil sa kanyang naging ugali. Siya ay tinawag na gagamba.

OVERARCHING
themes SENIORITY
The concept of SENIORITY in generation is
observed and respected
Seniority imposes having a broad range of knowledge and
experiences, thus implying that the elders have greater
wisdom than those who are younger than them.
Observing seniority from the elders mean acknowledging
their words, paying respect, and providing them the care that
they need.
“It is a disgrace to neglect aged parents or leave them in the
care of strangers.”
OVERARCHING
themes FAMILY
Upholding strong Filipino family ties and
relationships
Babies already receive attention before their birth because of the cautious
lifestyle their mothers take to ensure their care (avoiding several kinds of food
believed to cause physical defects, care for against supernatural beings, etc.)
Parents are legally and morally obliged to take care of their children: provide
for them and discipline them if necessary to their moral upbringing.
Corporal Punishment from Filipino Parents is a vital in child development.
conclusion
As evident through literature, studies, and proverbs, the concept of the family and
familial relationships themselves are heavily valued in a Filipino society.
We observe that the traditional Filipino family holds older generations in higher
regard for their “wisdom”, knowledge, and sheer advancement in years. They then
must be obeyed, treated with respect, and their advice more often than not,
heeded.
The Filipino trait of “utang na loob” is also evident within family dynamics as the
parents’ roles as nurturers and providers are given great emphasis in a child’s
development, but also as it is expected of the child to pay the parents in kind with
the same sort of nurture and provision when they are older.
