What is CAVITATION?

It is a phenomenon in which small vapor-filled cavities

are formed inside the liquid due to rapid changes in
the pressure.
Inertial(transient)

CAVITATION

Non-Inertial
1) INERTIAL CAVITATION
 Vapor bubble rapidly collapses inside the liquid
producing a shock wave.

2) NON-INERTIAL CAVITATION
• Bubble is forced to oscillate in size or shape due to
some acoustic field(sound vibrations).
Causes of CAVITATION
 Caused by the drop in local absolute pressure of liquid
below the vapor pressure.

CAVITATION in nature
CAVITATION in propellers
CAVITATION as destroyer
Mechanism of CAVITATION
CAVITATION in pumps
Applications of CAVITATION
 Enhance chemical reactions
 Breaking kidney stones
 Waste water treatment plants-extreme cavitation used
to breakdown pollutants
 Ultrasonic fat cavitation therapy
