The Carbon cycle

PRESENTED BY: LEONIDES CRISPINO D. DE CASTRO

MHC 1
SEPTEMBER 19, 2016
Carbon, the resource of Life

-Carbon serves as a common

element to all living
organisms.

-It plays a critical role in the

continued sustainability and
development of the human
race
The Carbon Cycle, the key to
Earth’s sustainability
 It is the movement of
carbon as it is recycled and
reused throughout the
biosphere.
 It is a critical
biogeochemical cycle that
directly affects the amount
of greenhouse gas present
in the atmosphere
The entirety of the Carbon cycle
Components of the
Carbon Cycle
Terrestrial biosphere component

 Composed of all
organic carbon
 Carbon is processed
through:
 Combustion
 Respiration
 Photosynthesis
 Absorption
 Release
Hydrosphere component

 Focuses primarily on
the ocean
 Carbon is primarily
dissolved in the
ocean
 Most forms of carbon
present will be
inorganic and in the
form of a carbonate.
Geological component

 Composed of the
earth’s mantle and
fossil fuels.
 Carbon is released
through the
subduction of certain
rocks.
Atmospheric component

 Most Carbon is in the

form of Carbon
Dioxide (CO2) and
Methane (CH4)
 These can be
processed through
Photosynthesis or
absorbed by rain and
oceans.
Effect of human influence

 Refers to anything
that affects the
carbon cycle.
 Combustion
 Deforestation
 Calcination
 Dramatic changes
in the environment
