1. Recognizing a Prism
b) 15 edges
AB, BC, CD, DE, AE, ....
c) 10 vertexs
A, B, C, D, E, F, ...
d) 20 Plane diagonals
AC, AD, CE, BE, BD, AG, BF,
...
e) 10 space diagonals
AH, AI, BI, BJ, CJ, ...
f. 5 diagonal faces
ACHF, BDIG, CEIH, ....
3. The Net of a Prism
4. Surface Area of a Prism
Lateral Surface Area (L.S.A) of a
Prism
L.S.A = ph
Where
p = perimeter of the base
h = height of the prism
B = the area of the base
Example
Find the total surface area of an isosceles
trapezoidal prism with parallel edges of the base 6
cm and 12 cm, the legs of the base 5 cm each, the
altitude of the base 4 cm and height of the prism
10 cm. Remember the
trapezoid area
formula
A = ½ h (b1 + b2)
Answer
The perimeter of the base is the sum of the lengths of
the sides.
p=6+5+12+5=28 cm
B=12(4)(6+12)=36 cm2
T.S.A.=ph+2B
=28(10)+2(36)
=280+72
=352 cm2
5. Volume of a Prism
Where
h = height of the prism
B = the area of the base
Example
Find the volume of the prism shown!
Remember the
rectangular area
formula
A = lw
Answer
B = lw
= 9×7
= 63 cm2 .
V=Bh .
=(63)(13)
= 819 cm3
Exercise
1. Square prism has a base edge a = 7 cm long
and a lateral edge h = 18 cm long. Determine
its volume and surface area
2. Find the volume and surface area of a
triangular prism with a right-angled triangle
base, if length of the prism base legs are 7 cm
and 4 cm and height of a prism is 24 cm.
