SIMPLE LINEAR REGRESSION AND CORRELATION

The collection of statistical tools that are used to model and

explore relationships between variables that are related in a
nondeterministic manner is called regression analysis. Because
problems of this type occur so frequently in many branches of
engineering and science, regression analysis is one of the most
widely used statistical tools. In this chapter we present the
situation where there is only one independent or predictor
variable x and the relationship with the response y is assumed to
be linear. While this seems to be a simple scenario, there are
many practical problems that fall into this framework.
