Application of combined heat power plant :-

• INDUSTRY:-as chemical plants, refineries, laundries, food industry, plastic molding industry because

combined plant provide a stable electrical power supply which we can isolate them from the local

electricity grid in needing.

• HOSPITALS :-we all know that hospitals need high electrical and thermal energy forthe critical

reliability so they use a 2MW so smooth operation of the clinical devices.

• COMMERCIAL:-as office building, airports, shopping malls, health club, universities.

• INSTITUTIONS:-like prisons, millitary bases, schools.

STEAM TURBINE
In Steam Turbine shaft is rotated steadily by impact reaction of steam as working

substances on blades of turbine.

It converts potential energy or heat energy into mechanical energy.

It works on Rankine Cycle.

Steam turbine is started by burnt exhaust gases coming out from gas turbine.
Open cycle gas turbine typical performance
HEAT RECOVERY STEAM GENERATOR

• It is also known as Waste Heat Recovery Steam Generator (WHRSG).

• It is a heat exchanger That recovers heat from a hot gas stream.
• There are two boiler drums in HRSG.
• Water supplied to boiler drum then evaporator in this water is
converted to steam.
• Steam pass through super heaters .
• Dry steam is supplied to water drum Then steam turbine.
SALIENT FEATURES OF HRSG

Horizontal Natural Circulation Design.

Steam generation at multiple pressure levels with or without reheaters.

Modular construction with spiral finned tubes for compactness.

Fully drainable heat transfer section

Short installation time.

Easy of operation.

Exhaust gases are used to generate steam.

TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE
MEASUREMENT

• TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT
- THERMOCOUPLE
- THERMISTORS
• PRESSURE MEASUREMENT
- BOURDON TUBE
- U TUBE
THERMOCOUPLE

Thermocouples generate a voltage directly dependent

on temperature.
They are particularly suited for high temperatures up
to 1,700 °C (3,092 °F).
The resulting output voltage is small (~40μV per °C
for a K type)

Electrically conducting and thermoelectrically dissimillr

material coupled at an interface is called thermocouple .
THERMISTORS

 A thermistor is a type of resistor

whose resistance is dependent
on temperature.
BOURDON TUBE

• The Bourdon tube is a no liquid

pressure measurement device.
• It is widely used in applications
where inexpensive static pressure
measurements are needed.
U TUBE

• The U Tube contains water or mercury in a U-

shaped tube
It is usually used to measure gas pressure.
WORKING OF STEM TURBINE
CONDENSER

 Situated below turbine.

 Purpose is to turn low energy steam back into water for use in WHRSG.
 Maintain proper flow of steam .
 In general improve the efficiency of plant.
 Air and non-condensable gases, which have corrosive action are removed
by dry air pump.
WORKING OF CONDENSER:-
SWITCHYARD AND TRANSMISSION EQUIPMENTS

Transformer
isolators
lightning areestors
potential transformer
ground wire etc.
CONTROL ROOM

 In control room various controls are provided simultaneously and

various measurement are provided here.

 In control room all the control panels are sensitive.

 Control room panel

-Fan control desk

-Fuel control desk

-Steam water desk

-Turbine desk

-Generator control panel.

ADVANTAGES OF COMBINED CYCLE PLANTS

 Small amount of water required

 Low environmental impact

 we can use natural gas, which is a very suitable fuel.

 maintenance and installation time is less compared to a thermal

power plant.

 it's highly reliable, flexible and available.

 it's generally operated fully automatically so it's suitable for use

where operating staff is less experinced
DISADVANTAGES OF COMBINED CYCLE PLANT

 The technologies needed more expensive and complex ,so initial investments for
building aplant is high.

 The Maintenance cost is high.

 It isn’t suitable as a peak load plant.

 The natural gas used is a non_renewable and a highly flammable source.
