Example
The sum of present ages of A and B is 60. 12 years ago their age
ratio was 5 : 4. Find the present age of A.

Sum of present ages of A and B is 60

12 years ago each of their age will be 12
less than now.
So, sum of their ages 12 years back was
60 – 12 – 12 =36

This was in the ratio 5 : 4

So, 36 is divided into 9 parts, each part = 4
A : B
5 X4 : 4 X4
20 : 16 These are their ages before 12 years

So, A’s present age = 20 + 12 = 32 years

Example
The ages of Ram and Mohan are differ by 16 years. 6 years ago
Mohan’s was thrice as that of Ram. Find the present age of Ram.

Before 6 years
Ram : Mohan
1: 3 Their ratio difference is 2
1x8:3x8 And age difference = 16
8 : 24 So, 2 units is the ratio = 16
1 unit = 8
So present age of Ram will be
8 + 6 = 14 years
Example
Kamala got married 6 years ago. Today her age is 1 ¼ times of her
age at the time of her marriage. Her sons age is 1/10th time of her
age. Her sons age is?

After 6 years her age is increased by ¼.

So, ¼th of her age = 6
1 ¼th is her current age = 30 years

Kamala’s present age is 30 years.

Her son is 1/10th of her age,

Example
Old women said no of days of my grand daughter = no of months
my daughters is. And my age in no of years is= no of weeks of my
grand daughter . sum of their ages is 115. Find d old women age?

age of grand daughter is d days d/365

years and age of daughter is d months
d/12yrs and age of old women is d/7
years

d/7 + d/12 + d/365 = 115years

4380d +2555d + 84d = 115*365*12*7
7019d = 3525900
d = 3525900/7019 = 502
age of old women is 502/7 71.7 years
Example
My brother is 3 years elder to me. My father was 28 years of age
when my sister was born while my mother was 26 years of age
when I was born. If my sister was 4 years of age when my brother
was born, then, what was the age of my father and mother
respectively when my brother was born?

My age = brother age - 3

mother's age when brother born=26-3=23
father's age when brother born=28+4=32
Example
3 years before the average age of a family of 5 members was 17.
The eldest son in the family got married. After including his wife’s
age the present average age of the family is 21. Then what is the
age of that wife?

5 members present average is 20 years.

Then their total age = 20 x 5 = 100

Consider age of his wife as x,

100+𝑥
= 21

So, the age of the eldest son’s wife is
26 years
Example
A man’s age is 150% of what he was 10 years back. His dad’s age is
5 less than double of his present age. Then what is his father’s age?

In 10 years 50% of his age was increased.

So, 50% = 10 years
Then 100% = 20 years
So, his present age is = 30 years

His dad is 5 less than double of his age

So, 30 x 2 – 5 = 60 – 5
So his dad’s age= 55 years
Example
The ratio between the present ages of Rahul and vijay is 3 : 11.
Vijay is 12 years younger than Pradeep. Pradeep’s age after 7 years
will be 85. What is the present age of Rahul’s father who is 25 years
older than Rahul?

Present age of Pradeep is So present age of Vijay will be

85 - 7 = 78, 78 – 12 = 66

Rahul and vijay 3 : 11 11 units = 66

As we know 18 : 66 1 unit = 6
So, 3 units = 18 (Rahul’s age)
Rahul’s father age is
18+25 = 43 years
Example
If 1 is added to the age of the elder sister then the ratio of their
ages is 0.5 : 1. But if 2 is subtracted from the age of the younger
one, the ratio becomes 1:3. Find the age of the 2 sisters.

Let the ages of 2 sisters is y , e

𝑦 0.5 𝑦−2 1

y = 0.5 e + 0.5 3y – 6 = e
2y =e+1

3y = e + 6

Example
Present ages of Shiva and Janaki are in the ratio of 5 : 4
respectively. Three years hence, the ratio of their ages will become
11 : 9 respectively. What is Janaki's present age in years?

9(5x + 3) = 11(4x + 3)
45 x + 27 = 44 x + 33

Then,
Shiva’s age is 5x = 30
Janaki’s age is 4x = 24
Example
A is two years older than B who is twice as old as C. If the total of
the ages of A, B and C be 27, the how old is B?

2x+2 + 2x + x = 27

5 x + 2 = 27 𝑥−2
x + x-2 + = 27
5 x = 25 2
x= 5 x = 10

So, C’s age is = 5 years So, A’s age is = 12 years

Then, Then,
B’s age will be 2 x 5 = 10 years B’s age will be 12 – 2 = 10 years
Example
A man is 32 years older than his son. In two years, his age will be
twice the age of his son. The present age of his son is:

After 2 years,
Son : Father
1 : 2 Their ratio difference is = 1 unit,
32 : 64 and age difference = 32 years.
So, 1 unit = 32 years
So, son’s present age = 32 – 2 = 30 years

After 2 years,
Father Son
2x __ x = 32
x = 32
So, son’s present age = 32 – 2 = 30 years
