Psychology simply means “STUDY OF THE SOUL OR
MIND”
Psychology is really a very new science, with most
advances happening over the past 150 years or so.
However, its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece,
400 500 years BC.
The emphasis was a philosophical one, with great thinkers
such as Socrates influencing Plato, who in turn influenced
Aristotle. Philosophers used to discuss many topics now
studied by modern psychology, such as memory, free will,
attraction etc.
Psychology deals with the following:

• (1) Mental processes;

• (2) Their expressions in behaviour,

• (3) Their concomitant physiological processes;

• (4) Their external stimuli;

• (5) Animal behaviour, human mind, normal behaviour, and

abnormal behaviour; and

• (6) The peculiar traits and the objective products of collective

behaviour.
There are 5 methods
in Psychology
• INSPECTION METHOD
• OBSERVATION METHOD
• EXPERIMENTAL METHOD
• SURVEY METHOD
• EMPIRICAL METHOD
1. INSPECTION METHOD

Psychologists obtain data from the subject or

participants feelings and experiences. Data are then
analyzed and interpreted.
2. OBSERVATION METHOD

This is both visual and oral. Psychologists

applying this method examine the subject in the
laboratory, classroom or institution. He records his
observation and later analyzes them.
3. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD

This is testing a theory by accurate trial of

controlled situation; psychological experiment
rechecked how certain belief is.
4. SURVEY METHOD
This method utilizes questionnaire to obtain
data from a large group of sample. Interview is
also applied in this method when sources of
respondents are not large.
5. EMPIRICAL METHOD

This is obtaining data by way of direct or

indirect experience. Recorded data is analyzed both
quantitatively and qualitatively.
