WHAT IS THEATER?

Collaborative form of fine art that uses live


performers, to present the experience of a real or
imagined event before live audience in a specific
place, often a stage.

HONORATA “ATANG” DE LA RAMA


She fought for the Kundiman when the Philippines
were still under American Rule. Because for her,
Kundiman expresses best the Filipino Soul. She
popularize the song “Mutya ng Pasig”

She was declared National Artists for Theater and


Music by Corazon C. Aquino.

Starred in: Marina, Mascota and Sueno de Un Vals.

LAMBERTO V. AVELLANA
He was dubbed as “The Boy Wonder of Philippine
Movies” in 1939. He also took on the challenge as
Film Director and has directed landmark films such
as KALDERONG PILAK (the first Filipino Film to be
show at the Prestigious Cannes International Film
Festival.)

A talented writer, director, educator and artist who
wrote a number of outstanding plays, 41 calculated.

At a young age of 14, he wrote his play entitled NO


TODO ES RISA in Spanish.

DAISY AVELLANA
She is the First Lady of Philippine Theater. She was
also a passionate director and writer. Her
contributions to Philippine Theater as cited, had
brought “a new level of excellence by staging and
performing in breakthrough productions of Classic
Filipino foreign plays.”

SEVERINO MONTANO
He was named as “Titans of Philippines Theater.” He
is an exception poet, director, and theater organizer.
He pursued the establishment of “legitimate theater.”

With about 1000 pesos, he used his own money to


start the Arena Theater in the Philippine Normal
University.

SALVADOR F. BERNAL
IN 1969, he began his career in theater. He was part
over 300 productions in art, film, music. He was
known for his style which is maximizing the use of raw
materials in theater productions. Most of these are
Filipino materials.

ROLANDO S. TINIO
He was known for translating western classics into
Tagalog, including the works of Shakespeare. He was
well remembered as someone “Whose original
insights into the scripts he handled brought forth
productions notable for their visual impact and
