INTRODUCTION

 WHAT IS SATELLITE?
 An artificial body placed in orbit round the
earth or another planet in order to collect
information or for communication.
SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
 WHAT IS SATELLITE COMMUNICATION?
 Satellite communications is the use of satellite technology in
the field of communications. The services provided by satellite
communications are voice and video calling, internet, fax,
television and radio channels.
HOW IT WORKS.
 A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that relays
and amplifies radio telecommunications signals via a
transponder; it creates a communication channel between a
source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on
Earth.
GROUND STATION OR EARTH STATION
 A ground station or earth station is a
terrestrial radio station designed for extra
planetary telecommunication with
spacecraft.
 Ground stations may be located either
on the surface of the Earth, or in its
atmosphere.
Earth stations communicate with
spacecraft by transmitting and receiving
radio waves in the super high
frequency or extremely high
frequency bands (e.g., microwaves).
When a ground station successfully
transmits radio waves to a spacecraft (or
vice versa).

SATELLITE ORBITS
 Geostationary satellites have a geostationary orbit (GEO) which is 36,000
kilometres (22,000 mi) from Earth’s surface.
 Medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites are closer to Earth. Orbital
altitudes range from 2,000 to 36,000 kilometres (1,200 to 22,400 mi)
above Earth.
 The region below medium orbits is referred to as low Earth orbit (LEO), and
is about 160 to 2,000 kilometres (99 to 1,243 mi) above Earth.
