forming new words, called derived words,

from words or word groups

Why words are being formed?

• Because of new inventions and changes
• Language is dynamic
• One of the distinctive properties of
human language is creativity
CLIPPING- Is the word formation process in which a word is reduced
or shortened without changing the meaning of the word.

3 TYPES OF CLIPPING:
 Back clipping-removing the end of a word.(gasoline- gas,
laboratory-lab, mathematics- math, examination-exam,
gymnasium- gym, microphone-mikead = advertisement
 cable = cablegram
 doc = doctor
 exam = examination
 fax = facsimile
 gas = gasoline
 gym = gymnastics, gymnasium
 memo = memorandum
 pub = public house
 pop = popular music,
 Fore clipping- removing the beginning of a
word. (hamburger- burger, necktie-tie,
airplane-plane)
 Middle clipping- retaining only the middle of
a word.(influenza- flu, jams (pajamas)
BLENDING- a word formation in which part of two or
more words combine to create a new word whose
meaning is often a combination of the original words.
Examples:
• Motor-hotel- motel
• Filipino-American- FilAm
• Clap-crash= clash
• Emotion- icon=emoticon
• Friend- enemy=frenemy
• Situation-comedy=sitcom
• Stay-vacation=staycation
• Work-alcoholic=workaholic
• Web-log=blog
• International-network=internet
• Spoon-fork=spork
ACRONYM- are typically formed by using the
first letter of each word in a phrase to form a
new word.
Examples:
YOLO- You Only Leave Once
ASAP- As Soon As Possible
LOL- Laughing Out Loud
BTW- By The Way
BRB- Be Right Back
KISS- Keep It Simple, Stupid
COMPOUNDING- is the process of combining
two words to create a new word.
Examples: basket-ball- basketball, sun-flower-
sunflower, notebook, superman, bookstore,
fireman, Earthquake, Everything, Sometimes,
fireworks, grasshopper, grandmother.

DERIVATION- is the formation of a new word or

inflectable stem from another word or stem.
Examples: national- nation, kindness- kind,
joyful- joy
