Animals sometimes mimic other animals.
Japanese scientists studied the ability of butterflies
to change the colour of their wings and developed
surfaces similar to them. It is another amazing
creation of nanotechnology. It is not simply a painted
surface, but one which is capable of changing colours
by manipulating the direction of light reflection.
Velcro was invented by Swiss engineer George
de Mestral in 1941 after he removed burrs from
his dog and decided to take a closer look at how they
worked.
Velcro is widely known

Learning from Termites how to create
sustainable buildings... EASTGATE CENTRE
• Termites build gigantic mounds inside of which they farm a
fungus that is their primary food source.
• The fungus must be kept at exactly 87 degrees F, while the
temperatures outside range from 35 degrees F at night to
104 degrees F during the day.
• The termites achieve this at by constantly opening and
closing a series of heating and cooling vents throughout the
mound over the course of the day.
• With a system of carefully adjusted convection currents, air
is sucked in at the lower part of the mound, down into
enclosures with muddy walls, and up through a channel to
the peak of the termite mound.
• The industrious termites constantly dig new vents and plug
up old ones in order to regulate the temperature.

After NASA examined the microscopic pattern of shark
skin, they created their own laboratory shark skin or
riblets film to use on a host of products. Why? Sharks are
some of nature's most efficient swimmers.
The small little grooves or dentricles in sharkskin
significantly reduces the drag of a vessel when its
attached to the surface. This sharkskin film is used on
a host of everyday objects like coatings for ship’s hulls,
submarines, aircraft, and even swimwear for humans.
They are actually just modified teeth and
are covered with a hard enamel. These
structures are packed tightly together and
grow with their tips facing backward,
giving the skin a rough feel if you run your
finger from tail to head, and a smooth feel
from head to tail.

SKIN LITE CREAM
The beetle has two chambered glands in which the explosive
chemicals are produced. When a predator approaches or the
beetle becomes alarmed, a valve opens, and a single drop of
the chemical falls from one chamber into the second, where
it combines with a catalyst and sets off an explosion.
A flexible membrane closes off the valve while the spray is
being released. After the explosion, the valve reopens, so
another drop of the toxin can enter the explosion chamber.
The mechanism creates a pulsed spray of toxin, rather than
a steady stream, which allows the explosion chamber to
cool down between pulses, Ortiz said.
It can be much hotter than a stream, and it can go much
faster because it’s a smaller amount of material.
Nature’s array of structure and design is
amazing.

could improve surface- glue.
The normal approach to a problem like that, explained Peter Buca -- vice
president for innovation and technology at Parker Hannifin -- would be
to take a look at other solutions both in-house and on the market and
try to cobble together a new application that might do a better job.
