BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
o Ideal situation
Mastering vocabulary must be mastered by every students who learn English as Foreign Language.
Contextual learning becomes a embryo of curriculum in these days. To produce an real product of learning
is very important to reach an effectiveness of learning. When the vocabulary can be mastered by students
the writing skill as a product of learning can be reached by students itself.
o Problem situation
Lack of vocabularies becomes a problem that come to students. Whereas, the real condition today the
students must have a product of learning process. Another problem is the teacher sometimes uses the
traditional method such as memorizing all of vocabularies. Teaching method of this way may make the
students aren’t be active to reach effective learning.
o Causes
The traditional way that used by teacher becomes a problem, why the students vocabulary do not enhance
such as memorizing all of vocabularies . In students side there is a problem also such as the students
never be active in the class.
o Solution
Attempting to solve this problem, writer use guided project based learning method to enhance students’
vocabulary mastery in writing skill.
PROBLEM OF THE STUDY

 1. What is the students’ vocabulary mastery in writing skill for the second year
students of MTs N Salatiga for the second year before applying Project Based
Learning Method in the academic year of 2017/2018?
 2. How is the Project Based Learning Method used to improve the students’
vocabulary mastery in writing skill for the second year students of MTs N
Salatiga in the academic year of 2017/2018?
 3. Is the Project Based Learning Method effective for students’ vocabulary
mastery in writing skill for the second year students of MTs N Salatiga in the
academic year of 2017/2018?
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 To describe profile of members’ vocabulary mastery in writing skill


before implementing of Project Based Learning to the second year of
students of MTs N Salatiga in the academic year of 2017/2018?
 To describe the vocabulary mastery in writing skill after implementing
Project Based Learning method for the second year students of MTs N
Salatiga in the academic year of 2017/2018
 To describe the result of vocabulary mastery in writing skill after
implementing Project Based Learning method for the second year
students of MTs N Salatiga in the academic year of 2017/2018
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. English teachers of MTs Negeri Salatiga


 The findings of this study can hopefully be used as a reference to improve the
quality of the English teaching and learning process
2. The students of MTs Negeri Salatiga
 It is expected that this study is able to help them drawing interests towards
English and improving their writing skill
3. The English education students of State Institute of Islamic Studies
Salatiga
 The findings of this study is hoped to become a source of materials which can
be used as a reference while writing their academic paper and a resource to
get information dealing with English teaching and learning process
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

 The writer limits this research because there are many factors can
improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in writing skill. Therefore, the
writer focuses on using Project Based Learning Method to support the
students to establish vocabulary mastery in their writing skill.
DEFINITION OF THE KEYWORDS

 Student
Student is a person who studies at college, polytecnic, or university, boy or girl
attending school, anyone who studies or who is devoted to the acquisition of knowledge.
(Hornby, 1974: 859)
 Writing
Writing is a productive skill of English which need to be mastered by English learners
because writing is a mean of communication and it is consider as indicator of
communication competence of the target language. Harmer (2004) states that writing
is the only skill which enable learner to produce a real product, in which the product is
touchable.
 Vocabulary
According to Richards (2002), vocabulary is a core component of
language proficiency and provides much of the basis how well learners
speak, listen, read and write. Vocabulary is the total number of words in
a language, all the words noun to a person or used in a particular book,
subject etc, a list of words with their meaning especially one that
accompanies a text book (Hornby:1995)
 Project Based Learning
Project based learning is a learning method which is not new in the field of
English as a Second Language and it is thought to be relevant with the teaching
and learning of English in 21 century (Larasati:2014) . Poonpon (2011) states that
project based learning is suitable with the English teaching and learning need
as a project based learning is an instructional approach that contextualizes
learning by presenting learners with problems to solve or product to develop.

using project based learning which has some steps. There are four steps while
implementing project based learning in this research. Using project based
learning as enhance students’ motivation, secondly the project based learning is

teacher the last the project based learning produces the result of students’ skill

This research aimed to investigated the effect of Project Based Learning on

listening and reading) are improved by Project based learning. The result had a
significant difference while implementing this strategy.

 Using Project Based Learning in this research as an approach that used to
students is very effective to apply as training tool while helping acquiring
vocabulary. This approach is very effective in group in enhancing the problem-
solving ability of the students.

 This research result that Direct instruction that comes from teacher can help
the students to improve while getting new vocabulary. The result is significant
different that can get from the students.

SETTING OF RESEARCH

a. Setting of Place
This research will be conducted at Madrasah
Tsanawiyah Negeri Salatiga (MTs N Salatiga)
which is located in Jalan Tegal Rejo No. 01
Salatiga.
TIME OF RESEARCH

 The implementation of the research was conducted in the first semester


in the academic year 2017/2018 on Agustus until Desember 2017.
THE METHOD OF RESEARCH
 The research used classroom action research
because of some reasons, firstly: To describe the
students’ vocabulary mastery skill before
implementing Project Based Learning Method for
the second year of students of MTs Negeri
Salatiga in the academic year 2017/2018.
DATA AND THE DATA RESOURCE
1. Place and activities
Place and activities, are the all places for learning
and the teaching learning speaking process of the
students and teacher for 8th class of MTs N Salatiga
2. Informant
Informant, is the all the students and English teachers
8th of MTs N Salatiga
3. Document
 The researcher will make a documentation to know
the situation of the school and students.
Documentation includes not only official
organizational papers, reports, brochures, but also
work-a-day, work plans, and material.
THE TECHNIQUE OF COLLECTING DATA
 Observation
Observation plays an important role not only for classroom research, but
also more generally for supporting the potential growth of teacher, in
addition in the process of school development.
 Test
In simple term, test is number measuring a persons’ ability, knowledge, or
performance in a given domain (Brown, 2004: 3).
 Documentation
Hopkins (1993: 140) states that document surrounding curriculum or other
educational concern can illumine rationale and purpose in interesting ways.
 Reflection
Reflection seeks to make sense of process, problem and real issues in
strategic action. It took acount of the comprehending the issues and
circumstances in which they arose.
 Interview
Interview is particularly useful for getting data besides the English teacher’s
experiences classroom action research
D. Data Analysis Method
 Descriptive technique
A descriptive technique is used to find the effectiveness out of the students
attitude during teaching learning process
 Statistical technique
Statistical technique is used to find the influence out of using Role play and
Photographs toward the students’ speaking skill from the implementation and
the result of pre-test and post-test.
 E. Design and Procedures of the Classroom Action Research (CAR)
There are many research designs in conducting a research. They are
action research, experimental, case study, descriptive, and so on. In
this study, the researcher uses action research as a form of
research and chooses classroom as a setting.
