Limitations of using conventional
engines(Turbo-jet, Turbo-prop,
Ram-jet , etc.) are-

Specific fuel consumption is high.

Space required is more for same thrust.

Construction is complicated.
Introduction to Detonation Engine-
 Detonation engine is engine which works on
detonation principle.
 In detonation engine combustion of products takes
place this creates sudden and violent explosion. Due
to this shockwave which produces travels at
supersonic speeds.
Deflagration to Detonation
transition(DDT)-

Deflagration can be accelerated to detonation but

length of tubes required is too large.

The process of deflagration to detonation is known

as deflagration to detonation transition(DDT).

Special purpose devices can be used in tubes to

enhance deflagrations to detonation.
Working principle of detonation
engine-
Types of detonation engines-

 Standing detonation engine.

 Pulse detonation engine.

 Rotary detonation engine.

1.Standing detonation engine-
Working of standing detonation
engine-
 Principle of operation of the Standing Detonation
Engine is relatively simple.

 Fuel is injected into supersonic flow and detonation

wave is stabilized inside the engine by wedge or
other means , and products are expanding inside
nozzle.
Disadvantages-
 The biggest disadvantages of such engine is very
limited (very narrow as related to Mach
number) range of operation conditions.

 The pressure losses on outer engine contour will be

higher than thrust generated inside engine core and
the use of such engine will not be justified for
obvious reasons.
History of the pulsejet-
 The pulsejet engine was first invented in the early
1900 by a Swedish inventor Martin Wiberg

 The pulsejet took a backseat in the engineering world

when the turbofan jet engine was invented

 Has returned to the engineering scene as of late

because of the interest in Pulse
Detonation Engines (PDE).
Types of Pulse Jets-
There are two basic types of pulsejets.
 valve or traditional pulsejet
 valve-less pulsejet.
Valve type Valve less type
2.Pulse Detonation Engine-

 Pulse detonation engine is a revolutionary engine

that uses detonation to combust the fuel.

 PDE can operate on 0 to 5 mach.

 Its operation is intermittent.

Types of PDE-

 Pure PDE.

 Combined PDE.

 Hybrid PDE.
Advantages-
 Compact size.
 Thermal efficiency over wide speed range is high.
 Maintenance is easier.

Disadvantages-
 Cannot withstand high temperature.
 Improper initiation of detonation.
 Costlier.
3.Rotating Detonation Engine-
 The principle of RDE is based on the creation of high
centrifugal force.

 Detonation wave travels through disk like path within

combustion chamber.

 Expanding detonation products from nozzle

will produce the thrust, allowing RDE to operate
continuously.
Rotating Detonation Engine-
Advantages -

 Compact combustion chamber.

 Organized for lean mixture.

 Low mass and less expensive.

 Low NOx emission.

Conclusion-
 DE in general has important advantages over current
propulsion systems.
 The fuel-air mixture is detonated in the engine cavity,
rather than deflagrated.
 The main concern is the production of the shocks
waves.
 The issues of transforming deflagration into
detonation and developing materials able to
withstand the intense heat and pressure must be
resolved.
