Antonio Pigafetta is an Italian
nobleman who accompanied
Ferdinand Magellan, He was
born in Vicenza in 1492, and
he was an Italian seafarer and
geographer. Pigafetta’s work
instantly became a classic that
prominent literary men in the
west like William Shakespeare,
Michel de Montaigne and
Giambattista Vico referred to
the book by their interpretation
to new world. The travelogue
of Antonio Pigafetta is the most
important primary sources in
the study of the pre-colonial
Philippines. His account was
also a major referent to the
event leading to Magellan’s
arrival in the Philippines.
Antonio Pigafetta wrote his first-hand observation and general impression
of the far east including their experience in the Visayas. In Pigafetta’s account , their
fleet reached what he called Ladrones Islands or the islands of the thieves Pigafetta’s
recounted.
“These people have no arms , but use sticks, have a fish bone at the end .
They are poor, but ingenious and great thieves , and for the sake of that we called
three islands the Ladrones island”

The Ladrones islands also known Marianas islands. These are located
south-southeast of Japan, west-southwest of Hawaii, north of new Guinea and east
Philippines.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese sea captain who sailed
under the Spanish flag. Magellan convince King Charles I of Spain to
support his voyage to the spice islands. The government of Spain provided
five ships for the Magellan expedition. The names of ships (1519)Ferdinand
Magellan ship were the Trinidad, the San Antonio , the Conception, the
Victoria and the Santiago. The fleet under Ferdinand Magellan sailed across
the Atlantic Ocean to South America and Rio de Janeiro . Magellan then
started to search for a passage to the Pacific Ocean. From the distance they
saw a beautiful group of islands. The Philippine Archipelago. Explorer
Ferdinand Magellan arrive in the Philippines and claimed the islands for
Spain. Filipino protect the land to the death, Magellan didn’t know Filipinos
had a very advance system of fighting called “KALI”. Lapu-Lapu (1491-
1542) was the ruler of Mactan, an island in visayas, Philippines, who is
known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted the Spanish
colonization. He is now regarded as the first Filipino hero.
When Lapu-Lapu saw ships, he lead his warrior s to the
shores and ready them for battle. When Spaniards reached the land, Filipino
warrior master of kali had form three division to the number of more than
one thousand five hundred and they charge down to the Spaniards with
exceeding loud cries. One warrior hurled a bamboo spare into Magellan’s
face but the latter immediately killed him with his lance, which he left in the
Warrior's body. Lapu-Lapu wounded him to fall face downward, then
immediately they rushed upon him with iron and bamboo spears and with
their cutlasses, until they killed Magellan. Knowledge of Magellan’s journey
come from the diary of Italian Antonio Pigaffeta. The Filipino warriors left
Pigaffeta alive.
Pigaffeta was one of the 18 men who returned to Spain
1522, out of the approximately 240 who set out three years earlier. The
voyage completed the first circumnavigation of the world ; Juan Sebastian
Elcano served as a captain after Magellan’s death.
