• Ceramic bearing balls have smoother surface finishes than most steel
bearing balls.
• Thermal properties are also better steel balls which result in less heat
generation due to friction at high speeds.
• Ceramic bearings balls are rated at higher spin rates than steel bearing
balls.
• Ceramic bearing balls can weigh up to 40% less than steel ones, depending on
size an
• Ceramic ball bearings can operate 20% to 40% faster than conventional bearings.
• The lighter balls allow the bearing to spin faster, and uses less energy to maintain
its speed.
• Non-condutive
• High hardness
• Corrosion resistance
• Long life
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERAMIC AND STEEL
BEARINGS
• Service life is two to five times longer than conventional steel ball bearings.
SOME OF THE CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS
ADVANTAGES.
• High hardness
• High corrosion resistance
• Ability to run without lubrication
• Non-magnetic
DISADVANTAGES
• High cost
• Sensitive to thermal shock
• Difficult to achieve a high
quality surface finish
APPLICATIONS
• Motor racing
• Aircraft accessories/aerospace
• Industrial machinery
• Medical equipment
• Precision instrument
• Biotechnology equipments
CONCLUSION
Due to world’s depleting iron stores it is important to look to alternative production
methods of steel components. Ceramic bearings are good way to do this as they posses
equal, if not better, qualities in service than their steel rivals. Therefore a move into this
may be seen as a cooperate and social responsibility, which would increase popularity.
