INTRODUCTION

• Silcon nitrate was developed in 1963 by NASA

• Ceramic bearings are typically construsted with ferrous inner and outer ring or race
with ceramic balls in the place of steel
• Hi-performance motor racing programs, like Formula-1, are using ceramic ball
bearing s.
• Silicon Nitrate ceramic balls are non-porous, non-magnetic, non corrosive and
lighter than steel. In ball form, ceramic balls are also harder than steel and because
ceramic balls are non-porous they are virtually frictionless and capable of spinning
faster than steel balls
• Ceramic Balls are usually made of following material
• Silicon Nitride (SiN4)
• Alumina Oxide (Al2O3)
• Zirconia Oxide (ZrO2)
• Silicon Carbide (SiC)
WHAT IS CERAMIC BALL BEARING?
• A ceramic ball bearing made of ceramic elements
from silicon nitride
TYPES OF CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS
1. Ceramic hybrid ball bearings
2. Partial ceramic ball bearings
3. Full ceramic ball bearings
CERAMIC HYBRID BALL BEARINGS
Ceramic Hybrid Bearings have Steel races and Ceramic Balls. Ceramic Balls
are suitable for applications where high loads, high speeds and extreme
temperatures are factors. Long life and the need for minimal lubrication make
this material appropriate for extreme applications.
PARTIAL CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS
Partial ceramic ball bearings, where the rolling elements, and the inner ring are
ceramic but the outer ring are of steel
FULL CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS
Full Ceramic Bearings have races and balls that are made entirely of ceramic material
and are superior to common steel bearings in many ways.

Ceramic ball bearings

PROPERTIES
• Ceramic bearings balls are typically made from (Si3N4) ceramic silicon
nitride and have greater hardness than steel balls resulting in longer ball
life.

• Ceramic bearing balls have smoother surface finishes than most steel
bearing balls.

• Thermal properties are also better steel balls which result in less heat
generation due to friction at high speeds.

• Ceramic bearings balls are rated at higher spin rates than steel bearing
balls.
• Ceramic bearing balls can weigh up to 40% less than steel ones, depending on
size an
• Ceramic ball bearings can operate 20% to 40% faster than conventional bearings.

• The lighter balls allow the bearing to spin faster, and uses less energy to maintain
its speed.

• Non-condutive

• High hardness

• Corrosion resistance

• Long life
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERAMIC AND STEEL
BEARINGS

Ceramic ball Standard steel

bearing bearing
• Ceramic ball is tremendously harder than steel .

• Ceramic ball is 60% lighter than a steel ball.

• Ceramic ball is much less prone to "skid".

• Ceramic ball is significantly rounder and has a finer finish than

conventional steel balls.

• Operating temperature for ceramic is 2000 degrees F. versus 600 F.

degrees for steel.
• Vibration levels of ceramic hybrid bearings average two to seven times lower than
that of steel.

• Service life is two to five times longer than conventional steel ball bearings.
SOME OF THE CERAMIC BALL BEARINGS
ADVANTAGES.
• High hardness
• High corrosion resistance
• Ability to run without lubrication
• Non-magnetic

DISADVANTAGES
• High cost
• Sensitive to thermal shock
• Difficult to achieve a high
quality surface finish
APPLICATIONS

• Motor racing

• High speed Machining and grinding spindles

• Aircraft accessories/aerospace

• Industrial machinery

• Medical equipment

• Pumps and compressors

• Precision instrument

• Biotechnology equipments
CONCLUSION
Due to world’s depleting iron stores it is important to look to alternative production
methods of steel components. Ceramic bearings are good way to do this as they posses
equal, if not better, qualities in service than their steel rivals. Therefore a move into this
may be seen as a cooperate and social responsibility, which would increase popularity.
