• Most of the crew of the expedition of FM is Spaniard, so some of them
don’t want to obey him. But Before the expedition start, FM gave orders to
the master of the ships.
• Sept. 20, 1519 – set sail from St. Lucar (route South – West)
• Sept. 26 – 29 , stayed in Great Canaria to get food supply
• October 1 , stayed at Port Monterose to get pitch (necessary for ships)
• March 16, 1521 – arrived at Zamal Island ( 300 leagues from Thieve’s Island)
• March 17 – aarived at Humunu Island, set tents for the sick & killed sow
• March 18 – the chief of Zuluan arrived to Humunu Island using boat with nine men.
- They exchange gifts.
- Decided to stay for another for the next 8 days.
- Schione is the name of the chief of Zuluan
- He gave them Umai – rice
- Cochi – coconut
- Palmito – coconut tree
- Uraca – palm wine
• FM called Humunu Island as The Watering Place of Good Signs (first signs of gold & white coral &
have 2 springs)
• On nearby island they saw people who they called Caphre – people that are naked , they only
have bark trees that round in their middles.
• Their hair is black, long, reaching to the waist, they carry daggers.
• March 25 – Pigafetta went to fish on the side of the ship but he slipped through the water &
luckily he was been saved.
• March 25, leave the island of Humunu, they passed the Island of Cenalo, huinanghar, Ibusson, &
Abarien.
• March 28, 1521 – they arrived at Mazzava Island
They were approached by boloto (small boat) with 8 men & Fm ask Enrique ( slaved from Sumatra
or Taprobana to talk to the natives) after 2 hours, 2 Balanghai (long boats)approached the ships.
• FM gave the chief large bar of solid gold & chest full of ginger.
• March 29, (good Friday) FM sent Enrique to the chief and said this “I had not come to his country
as an enemy, but as a friend. And the chief was happy about it, he gave FM 3 china dishes.
• FM gave the chief robe of red & yellow cloth Turkish Fashion, & very fine cup.
• FM & the chief had a cassi – cassi (brotherhood)(Rajah Colambu & FM)
• FM stayed at Mazzava for 7 days
• While they are in Mazzava, they explored different island, this are the island of Ceylon, Bohol,
Canighan, Baibai & Satighan.
• Satighan – they find a bird called Barbastigly who is large as eagles.
• Mazzava is 20 leagues away from Satighan.
• While they leave Satighan, Rajah Colambu could.nt follow their ship so they waited him near the
islands of Polo, Ticobon, & Pozzon.
• Satighan is 20 leagues away from Zzubu
• April 7, 1521 – they entered the island of Zzubu, they artillery fired. But FM ask again Enrique to
reassured that FM the firing of artillery is just a fashion or custom. He said that FM is was captain
of the greatest king of the world & he was going to command the sovereignty to discover the
Moluccas Island.
• The chief of Zzubu is Rajah Humabon, he welcomed FM to Cebu & followed FM. But Lapu – lapu
the chieftain of Mactan refused to follow the order of Rajah Humabon to follow FM.
• It started the Battle of Mactan. April 27, 1521
• After the battle, Only 2 ships survived, FM & other crew were killed.
• They fled and passed the island of Cagayan & port of Cipit. Taking east, and quarter south – east
to find the island of Maluco.
• After they left Cipit, they found the island of Zolo & Taghima. Were the 2 pearls of the King our
Burne is found.
• King of Burne, married the a daughter of King of Zolo
• He wanted to get the pearl by any means so he sent 5 prahus full of armed men & went to Zolo
and took the king & 2 sons & they were not sent to liberty until they gave them the 2 pearl.
• They continue the course east – quarter north – east, they passed 2 inhabited island, Cavit &
Subanin, & Monaripa ( 10 leagues form Subanin)
• Monaripa inhabitants don’t have houses in the shore, they live in the vessels.
• They also found the Island of Butuan & Calagan were the best cinnamon grows.
• They did a little barter, 2 big knives ( they get it from Gov. of Pulaoan) for 17 lbs of cinnamon.
• Cinnamon- small tree, 3-4 cubits high. Thickness of man’ finger. 2 in a year harvest.
• Cinnamon in the island is called Cainmana, Cain – wood, Mana – sweet.
• Continuing Nort – east they entered the island of Maingdanao. To get precise location of Maluco.
• They took possession of bignaday – vessel similar to prahu. Killed 7 out of 18 men to lead them to
Maluco Island
• The 12 men were all chief of Mindanao, one of them is the brother of the king. 30 leagues from
Cavit.
• Continuing South –east , they found 4 island, Ciboco, Birabam, Batolac, Sarangani & Candigar.
• October 26, 1521 – they met a very great storm, that cost damage to Victoria.
• 3 saints in the mast, St. Elmo (mainmast) St. Nicholas (head of foremast) & St. Clara (mizenmast)
• September 6, 1522, entered the bay of St. Lucar
• 18 men, 1 ship.
• They had a trip for 14, 460 leagues. Completed the going round earth from east – west.
• Sept. 8 – anchor to Seville to discharged artilleries. Paid visit to St. Maria of Victory & St. Maria de
Antigua
• Pigafetta left Seville went to Valladolid to present to Sacred Majesty Don Carlos the book written
by him, went to Portugal to King John & tell stories, return to Spain to France to present few things
to Madam the Regent, mother of most Christian King Don Francis, back to Italy , to established his
abode and vigils to Lord Philip Villiers Lisleadam, the grand master of Rhodes.
