    A typhoon is a severe tropical storm that is the same weather phenomenon as a hurricane. Typhoons form over warm ocean waters and gain energy from this interaction, but they weaken when moving over cold water or landmasses due to a loss of this energy source. Landmasses and bodies of water affect the strength and path of typhoons based on their ability to either provide warm water that fuels the storm or cause it to weaken through cold water or land interaction.
